.308 AR Platform

I plan on making this purchase in the next year. I've spoke to several people, read reviews, but I've always found SOCNET to the place with the most information from as many view points as possible.

Prime usage of the weapon would be something with a longer reach than my 5.56. I'm looking at an 18" or 20" barrel length.

DI or Piston ?

The bank account says I've got up $3500.00 for the purchase.

Thanks in advance for the input

I got a S&W M&P10 from Sportsmans Outdoor Superstore- they had a pretty good LEO/MIL discount, and I paid just over $1000 for the rifle. Still haven't gotten glass for it- I'm leaning toward an ELCON Specter DR. Gun, glass, mags and LCE/RACK + support gear will put you near your budget.

I've only put ~100 rds through the rifle, with BUIS, but have had no issues so far.

There's only a few left, but this place has PoF P308 rifles for $1600. It has a piston, but 16.5" barrel. http://www.tannerssportcenter.com/

Here's one of them that's for sale. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=454394926

And here's where I got the info. http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=986223

bravodelta...you're not going to believe this, but that's my gunshop back home, GREAT shop and good guys to do business with. If you have FB I'd advise you to like their page, they're always running sales and special buyes

If it were me, I'd buy an LMT MWS and never look back. It's a great rifle and the best 308 on the market for the money. My good friend just picked one up for $1750 out the door from DSG Arms. YMMV

LWRC REPR. Excellent rifle. I have 2 and can't be happier with them. Available in 16", 18", or 20".

I have also heard the HK MR762 is also excellent -- but that it has proprietary parts so you can't just pick up spare pieces for it.

GA Precision GAP 10 or Larue OBR. Both at the upper end.

raven1222 23 November 2014 20:09

Quantico Tactical also offers a great Mil discount on the S&W MP-10
Optics Ready $999 (military rebate)
MOE $1199 (military rebate)

The REPR and OBR are 2 I've been looking at. Hope I get the feed back here to help with a decision. POF anyone ?

Attila175 23 November 2014 21:42

I have no personal experience with the OBR, but I do have a GAP AR10. It is from a group build on Snipers Hide. The thing is a tack driver. The newer ones use shorter barrels but are good for 308. Mine has a 22" barrel. Also the newer ones are using mags that are easier to use and more versatile.

Thanks for the info, I'll look into them

As I said before, I have the REPR in the 20" model. I bought based partially off of the opinions of the guys here on SOCNET. It was the REPR or an KAC SR25, the opinion was that the piston system of the REPR would work better since I planned to run suppressed. Plus the side charging handle and adjustable gas system is extremely nice, IMO. The 20" some standard with a Geissele DMR trigger.

IMO for $3500 I would not do the following; SCAR or HK MR762.

The SCAR is a nice gun but considering it is $2700 but seems like a compromise by FN. It seems like the up sized the Mk.16 without really thinking long and hard about that decision. Proprietary mags is the final nail in the coffin.

The HK MR 762 is a phenomenal gun but IT also has very expensive proprietary mags that are $100 and its not the lightest.

What I would do is go after the LMT.

OP says in the thread title ".308 AR Platform"

GA Precision makes good stuff. LWRC makes good stuff. LMT makes good stuff too. Longer reach meaning what? Precision rifle with a variable power optic, biased towards long range but not worthless close in? All purpose little bit of everything? Close gun that won't leave you hanging at 500m?

If suppressed, I still think the way to go is gas piston. Same for really short barrels. Just keeps heat out of the system. OTOH, it's more reciprocating weight. Not a lot, but more.

Precision gun, no can, go with a 20" GAP and something like a 3.5-10x M3 Loopie or possibly something from Vortex in Larue mounts. Mature reliable hardware. S/F.....Ken M

I have a GAP AR10 in a 260 and love it. Haven't had it very long but the times I have been able to shoot it, wonder rifle.

Is $3500 include optics?

I'm looking at something all purpose with a range out to 800m...LaRue is looking at a 4 month wait right now, 4 could turn into 6-8 months and I'm fine with that.

$1600 for POF is a tremendous deal. I have had several and have since given them to clients. The Rock Creek barrels are tremendously accurate and the newer rifles are much lighter than the ones I owned. If you and the ammo can shoot to 800, a POF rifle surely will. All of the internals are NP3 coated as well. Get one with the upper and lower NP3'd and you are good to go. I have a 6.8 in that configuration.

If you buy a used one, make sure it has the roller head in the bolt retainer key (I am not sure if that's the exact nomenclature) Hard to see on this pic.

No $3500. just on the weapon, optics will be separate.

Hey, I'm twice divorced, kids are grown and I'm on a good contract, time for me to have the toys I've always put off.

5831lvn 24 November 2014 12:25

TFG...Been waiting for your .02, that 1600. deal is gone, checked it this morning. You've been happy with POF's ?
