I am needing info on international IPhones and carriers

I have a IPhone 8 that I am sending to a friend in Nairobi, Africa. This phone has a Verizon phone card in it. Can the carrier put a phone card in it? Is there Verizon and AT&T carrier available?
What are the rates in making calls to the states for international calls ?
This phone has been having WIFI problems but besides this the I Phone 8 works great.
Your expertise is welcome. Thanks

Verizon sells their iPhones unlocked and you can put whichever SIM in throughout the world.

AT&T does not sell their phones unlocked.

If it is a Verizon phone then you should be GTG.

I believe that he will need a nano sim card, which should be available.

If your friend is a local, the wifi might matter. Outside of the 1st world, no one actually buys phone plans. They use wifi and whatsapp or another of the other free messaging apps.

None of my regional work contacts ever used the actual phone.

I do pay for ProtonVPN, along with a ProtonMail subscription, and I am a satisfied customer. As long as there is a good connection to the net, the VPN is pretty much flawless. It gives me a bit of ease that local hackers and gov surveillance will just capture gobbledegook.
