Tabata, Ernie/ D-476/ Chapter 1-18

This is a few days old but just found out about it. Pulled this off the SFA website:

Ernie was admitted to Womack Army Hospital and was to be discharged today to a rehab center. They kept him and are not allowing visitors. Ernie apparently had a relapse of pneumonia that had him down a while back. Please keep Ernie in your thoughts and prayers.

All 18C should know him best and understand the amazing contribution he made to the committee while in retirement. Get well Mr. Tabata, we are thinking of you. I will update as I hear more.

Glebo 4 August 2015 12:49

Get well soon Ernie...man, hope he pulls through.

Just saw him at the Thai Pepper not o long ago....

leopardprey 4 August 2015 12:49

Get well soon. Best and most memorable instruction had during the SFQC was from him. A true legend in the SF community, that is for sure!

Boyo72 4 August 2015 12:51

Whats even more amazing is he just recently came off jump status, I think within the last year. The guy is an amazing legend.
Does anyone know the status of "Pappy"?

HighDragLowSpeed 4 August 2015 13:17

privileged to have had him as an 18C instructor....

me and a few complete generations of 18C candidates

Pappy retired down around the Holden Beach area. He had a house down there.

Don't know if he ever makes it up this way or not though...

When Ernie was a boy, he saw the Japanese planes fly by during Pearl Harbor....

Good to hear about Pappy, he was also a fountain of wisdom.

Glad to hear hes still kicking. His TA instruction was second to none. Had the privilege of learning, and jumping with him. Well into his 80's.

Godzilla 4 August 2015 18:14

I got an update today and he has been moved to UNC-CH.

I Hope Mr. tabada gets well.... I learned a lot form him

As for Pappy all I can remember is he called us "clinton soliders" all the fucking time. LOL it's seriously all I remember from his instruction.

If nobody finds out before morning I will post the hospital first thing after I get into work tomorrow. Couldn't track anybody down before going home tonight. I will also reach out to Cliff Newman at SFA.

Yes, I'm tracking UNC-Chapel Hill from couple of Ernie's friends, one was an update from Ernie's son.

Ernie's reputation is known well beyond the Charlie course. If I recollect, the Charlie studs were telling stories about him in 90-91 when I was an Echo stud. I continued hearing his name throughout my career. Godspeed to a full and complete recovery Ernie.

I think he was the instructor that, told us to drink a beer when we would get stuck on 13/13.

BTW...Horne was the 1SG.

All- I just received a message from Cliff Newman at the SFA, Ernie is at UNC Chapel hill, unfortunately only family members are allowed in to see him. He was admitted yesterday and the prognosis does not look good. Keep him in our thoughts and prayers. I am waiting back to see if its ok to send anything.

I'm sorry...it wasn't my fault...lol

But back on track, yeah, moving up to CH Hill doesn't sound to good. But, thinking of it, it's better than WOMACK...hopefully...

Good luck Ernie...

Guy 5 August 2015 09:43
