There a few of us setting around BS'ing one day. Guys who had spent a lot of time around Bragg, Benning, HAAF and FT Lewis in the 70's through the early 90's. One of the younger guys who had got out of the Army in 02, refered to us as doing stuff "old school". So this list was born:

[How many of these apply to you?]

33. You have laid awake at night dreaming of doing parachute assault on Havana, Managua, Tripoli or Tehran

Not bad.

I was horrified to note that I actually predate some of these.

Never thought that I would qualify as "prehistoric."

I'll never forget my first day. The 1SG slapped the face of one guy in formation three times for wearing beads around his neck and ripped them off of himand stomped all over them. He was pissed. Black Hats had a way of dealing with you in a physical way while you were trying to remove dummy chutes during Ground Week.

Trip_Wire 20 March 2007 17:21

I remember most of them and then some!

1947 — 1990 ;)

17. Had a MC-1B drivers license....

How about "Have" a MC-1B drivers license! Of course I had been "driving one" for three years before they decide to give one of these! Anyone else?

Cuda 20 March 2007 19:31

I am qualified for 27 of them. I started my enlistment in 1983.

I know things have become easier. But are you saying the men only have to keep up with the woman to pass the runs? Do they have runs to pass?

One I didn't see mentioned was the Airborne Puke Express. There was a bus that would take us to Hay Street on the weekends. It would make hourly shuttles to and from Bragg. Don't remember if it was unit specific, or provided by post. This one was a year before I arrived. Anyone remember the old timer who lived in a poncho Hooch with his Thai Wife. It was at the entrance to the Meta Mile area. He ran an extension cord from the Engineer building near the old 7th Group area for electricity.

Also remember when I was in the light weapons course. Instructors smoking while teaching class. When I was in SWC, late nineties. The poor disadvantaged Col Remo outlawed dipping in class. Guess thats why he made General. One I never hear about. The Light Weapons instructor who had the AD while on the platform. Right in front of the class. Nothing ever happened to him. He did make the cover of the SF weapons Manuel later on.
Heard he later shot himself in the foot. Explaining the pool of blood that was added to many weapons Manuel's with a red pen.

magician 20 March 2007 19:36

I remember when you could still get a "rub and a tug" in an AFEES facility in the ROK!

I remember the old "Net, GP Medium," and still think that it was one of the best pieces of gear ever issued.

:)

SnakeEat 20 March 2007 20:06

AFEES burger, turkey loaf, John Wayne bars, LRRP rations

HALO teams jumped the MC-3 (paracommando) out of C-123s

SF Beam and Lazer teams using polar bear transponders to ID targets

"Advisory" tours in El Sal (CIB was awarded ten years later for these "advisory" missions)

The Recondo Pit at Fort Lewis

B teams composed of broken A team guys typing your leave form (with carbon paper)

Spec 4, Spec 5, Spec 6, Spec 7

The 101st Airborne Division with blue berets (and no bullwinkle wings)

16 Army Divisions

$12.00 for a set of OG-107s; brown shirt with the class-A uniform

and black berets that had to be earned...

I'll quit now, feeling T-Rexish.

abnremf 20 March 2007 20:37

You guys forgot the p.t. uniform.... yellow shorts?

....yellow running suits with pants that shrunk up to your knees, jacket that shrunk (in the back) up to your shoulder blades...always wondered why no one went to jail over those.

HighDragLowSpeed 20 March 2007 20:47

Not too old but still old enough school to remember:

- 1st Special Warfare Training *Battalion*

- Air Jordan (still "his Airness" to me) and the rest of the "body nazis"

- "best chili-dogs this siiiiiide of the Mississippi!"

- Edited to add: Little Ricks (above Ricks....what was that German chick's name?) and the Moonlight Bunny Lounge on Hay Street
