How does the SCAR H stack up against high end .308 ARs?

Ive shot both but I am not LE or Mil so ive never used either of these rifles in a serious capacity. I did prefer to shoot the .308 ARs though , tbh.
Anyways, I am guessing at least a few of you have ran these weapons hard , whats your preference and why?

Im new here and hope a "vs" thread of this type is not against the rules. I am thinking I might get one of these rifles in the near future but wanted to hear some experiences you guys have with these platformss.

Gavin should be here shortly.....

Reciprocating charging handle is a no-go for me. Anything designed after 2000 shouldn't have one.

That is a big drawback for me also. I am only considering one of these rifles at this point.

Polypro 13 April 2019 11:02

I'd call a SCAR *the* high end, LOL!

You can flip the charging handle if you want (I think it comes attached on the right?) Like AKs, 240/249, etc.. Yeah, weird it's fixed, especially since the final FAL versions weren't? Poor man's forward assist.

((gavin blows through the door, like Kramer entering Jerry's apartment))

I carried a SCAR17 on a combat deployment. The rifle didn't let me down...but...I personally prefer the AR platform.

SCAR PROS: Easily changes barrels, very reliable piston system, sight line is very close to bore.

SCAR CONS: Mags can be hard to find, accessories aren't as common as those for AR platform. The reciprocating charging handle is a serious negative for right-handers, but I'm a lefty. SCAR is a PITA to clean (compared to ARs).

If I was going to spend SCAR-level $$$ on a 7.62 rifle, it would be the Daniel Defense DDM5.

KW Driver 13 April 2019 11:22

Why a DD vs say a LaRue?

Price. I haven't priced the LaRues lately, but my impression is that LaRue's are for those in higher tax brackets. LaRue, LMT, and KAC are the best there is, but that quality comes at a price.

ETA: I was wrong...I just went and ogled the LaRue, and the price is the same as the DD. IMO, Daniel Defense, LaRue, KAC, LMT, POF, Barrett, and Aero all make really good 7.62 ARs. I'm probably leaving a company or two out of my list.

Why the DDM5 over a LMT MWS?

I didnt see your last post before I posted, my bad Gavin. Thanks for the info.

I am leaning towards the AR. I am a fan boy of the AR platform, tbh.
Theres a couple other rifles im considering though but these two were the only ones that are really comparable.

The new LMT DI 7.62 is a lot of quality for that price. I have 2 LMTs (a piston 5.56 and a DI 300 BLK, both with 16" barrels), and three DDs (5.56 DI 10.3" SBR, 5.56 DI 14.5", 6.8 DI 16"). I'm very happy with all of them.

I’m a huge fan of the SCAR 17. But if I were going to spend the money, I’d build my own. If I were to buy a .308 platform I’d spend money on the Noveske N6 and REPR. Building your AR will be a lot more satisfying, in my opinion.

If you had to chose only one, what one?

The POF revolution is a .308 on an AR 15 chassis. At 7.2 lbs for the piston version and under 7 for the DI, the revolution is the way to go. Full disclosure, I have a 5.56 and a 6.8 in the piston version.

What about the mags in calibers other than 5.56?

The Fat Guy 13 April 2019 23:17

I am not sure what you are asking. The revolution as pictured comes in 6.5 creedmore as well

Dangerous 13 April 2019 23:20

Are the mags readily available? Some are proprietary.

The beauty of 'Murica is that I don't have to choose just one! Besides, what am I doing with it? Living in a post-apocalyptic zombie nightmare? Playing at being TK in a cabin in MT? On the run from the mob? Protecting HM from a pack of adoring fourteen-year-old boys?

Lol

I have a few questions, if you dont mind.

Is the wear and tear on the .308 AR platforms similar to the AR15s (Gas rings, barrel life, buffer springs, bolts, etc)?

Is there still issues with Scars "eating" optics or their stocks breaking?
