If your department doesn't pay for it, pony-up the cash your self. When you're getting your ass kicked at 3 AM you can blame the PD all you want, but it's you getting your ass kicked.

Yes, this! I often tell people that I have spent thousands of hours and tens of thousands of dollars on my own training. Why? Cops are cheap, departments are cheaper. At the end of the day you have 1*.
