This was an absurd practice I believe originating from the need to keep some missions in odd parts of the world quiet.
Please note the original report date of 2008, things have largely changed since then.

We had a brit SAS trooper killed by an elephant on a 'training mission' in the Zambezi valley in 1992...survived Falklands, first Gulf war and gets killed helping us (on official duty) fight rhino poachers and the Brit government demanded absolute secrecy- there was nothing in our newspapers and nothing in the Brit ones. I helped scrape up what was left and presume his family got a small box and letter starting ...the queen regrets to inform you...

Taking time out this Memorial Day to remember Sergeant Nick Brown, KIA 26 Mar 08 in Iraq.

There were several others wounded that night. I often wonder what happened to them....what their outcomes were.
