We are accepting garbage into the academy, and turning out garbage onto the road. The senior guys are trying their best to hold back the tide and get guys up to caliber as best as possible, but unfortunately we continue to see a decline overall.
I do wonder if the decline in applicants over the years is due to people having more options, or the LE agencies being really bad at making themselves attractive to suitable people.

By that I mean marketing, not changing benefits etc.

Maybe they should try a marketing plan around the theme "A Police Force of One"....

I think moreso its people simply choosing to do anything else but police work. Not enough people willing to weather the storm of public perception or deal with the scrutiny that LE is under.

Kinda my point.

Mind you, I wouldn't be pointing people into that career now either. Become a firefighter!

Oh, man, that used to be the case. I really looked forward to working with those guys.

Now, the firefighters have gotten the case of "I'm a first responder, I'm a hero and should be worshipped" bullshit.

They are worse than a few docs that I know.

In my experience police tests are generally not too difficult.

Nothing like telling them theyre second responders, or giving them shit for staging before the scene is cleared...they love it haha. Unfortunately a lot of cops are feeling themselves too much these days as well.

Responders are human -- professional responders keep their egos in check while the chest thumping goobers thump them every chance they get. That's always been.

When I was retiring in 1991 , I talked to GSP recruiter. He was upbeat and I was thinking about retiring and going into GSP. I talked to a GSP Trooper who said the biggest drawback was they only pay for 40 hours work nothing over that and you are on call 24/7. Not sure if this is still the case, but then it was a definite turn off.

Unconfirmed information suggests the GSP commissioner's assessment of
'all interviewed admitted cheating' may be inaccurate. More info as it develops...

Recruitment is much more difficult in states with low pay and no unions.

I think you tend to see more corruption in places with low pay too. (Mass State Police: "Hold my beer.")
