Free stuff from the VA - Shoes, boots, Tabs, med devices, etc

Recently I received a few items from the VA that while free, did not really strike me as a big deal; glucose monitor, BP cuff, TINS unit, even a pedometer. But now I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 Android tablet. This thing is about as high speed as you can get.

The purpose of the tab is to be able to do video appts with the VA if you cannot get to the facility. Actually works GREAT for that! There are no fees or charges, and you can get online anywhere, no Wi-Fi connection needed. You only have to create a new User. There is no record of you getting online and you never have to log on . I'm told.

Also, if you are diabetic you are allowed 2 pairs of footwear per year. These are not cheap old man shoes. You select from a catalogue that includes Nike, Merrell, NB, Dunham, Columbia, UA, etc. I got a pair of Dunham boots (Cloud) and Merrell trail shoes. Over $300 in footwear.

I'm sure there are more things available. If you know of any please share. These are nice to know bennies.

I should have been more clear about the free shoes/boots. A local clinic will take an exact cast of your feet and the factory insole will be replaced with the new form-fitted ones. You do get to keep the factory insoles, also.

Wow, thanks for that. I'm T2, and they just asked me about the shoes. I assumed they were the dumpy old clodhoppers. I might have to look into this more. Is the catalog online?

Support stockings also available if you have problems with leg swelling. I have to buy my own shoes but do get specially form fitted insoles for my feet as well as glasses and hearing aids.

Forgot about the eyeglasses and hearing aids. I got my 2 pairs of glasses back a few months ago.

Bobmueller, there is a catalogue but I cannot find it online. It was at the Ortho/Prostesis clinic I went to. I believe it was an internal online catalogue. You should contact a nurse at the diabetic clinic and ask who they use in the local area, then contact them to gain access to it. They try to hook you up with a clinic close to you but if you live in Pigs Knuckle you will likely have to travel to a little larger metro area. But yes, all high-end footwear.

Thanks Ramz. Got a decent VAMC right here in town. Will contact them next week.

Forgot to mention electric wheelchairs and scooters. VA will also pay for inside or outside lifts to be put on vehicles to tote the wheelchairs or scooters as well.
