Sacramento County Sherriff Helicopter crash...2 fatalities, 1 critical.

On July 13th 2005, at about 1900 hours, the Sacramento County Sheriff's helicopter was responding to a distress call at a nearby lake when it appareantly sufffered an engine failure and crashed into a hillside. Witnesses stated they saw the helicopter flying and then heard a loud boom and saw fire coming out of the engine area. The helicopter yawed and pitched, struck and rolled down a hillside, causing a grass fire as well.

Deputy Joseph Kievernagel, age 36, was a 19 year deputy and the pilot. Deputy Kevin Blount, age 29, was a 7 year veteran and pilot/observer, and Deputy Eric Hendrickson, age 28, is a seven year veteran and observer trainee.

Deputies Kievernagel and Blount were killed, and Deputy Hendrickson remains in critical condition.

The helicopter was an American Eurocopter EC-120B and was puchased new in 2000.

RIP Brothers, and wishing a full recovery for the survivor. Most of those P.D. pilots are veterans. Wonder if they were.

The Deputy that survived is paralyzed and settled with Eurocopter for A LOT of money.

He donated $500,000 to Mercy San Juan hospital’s trauma program.
