Kentucky Derby

I could give a shit less about horse racing. It is quite a tradition though. I've certainly never drank a Mint Jubilee.

Here's the latest odds. Any favorites?

Fastest horse being rode and whipped by the smallest midget for 500$, Alex. (final Jeopardy theme playing).

I'm not a betting man...but I'm going with Mendelssohn. Strong horse. Won its last race by. 18 1/2 lengths. If it gets up front, Look Out. Track sensitive though.

Eddie Olczyk likes Good Magic.

He's going to be a busy man this weekend.

My bets are on Justify ('cause Mike Smith), Audible and Noble Indy. Fuck the odds. I will be at the dealership trying to sell cars. I will have to drink my mint juleps after work.

When I was (much) younger, we used to go to the Preakness and go on the infield. Never saw any horses, but I vaguely remember having a whole lot of fun.

I stand corrected. Anyhow, the closest I've came to a fucking Mint Julep is Peppermint Schnapps.

The horse with the longest neck in the end will win. These horses are amazing athletes.

Ever have a Mojito? It's essentially a Mint Julep made with Rum instead of Bourbon.

Negative. Plenty of each listed ingredient though.

I'll make you a deal - for every reference you post that agrees with you I'll post one that agrees with me.

On second thought, I think I'll just drink a Mint Julep and not worry about it. Life's too short....

Local radio show had a funny game, Kentucky Derby horse, or strain of weed.

Going to this event just for the experience is on the bucket list that I intend to get to someday.

The Kentucky Derby is on my list of things to see before I die. Need to find a cool hat to wear though.

LOL…I went to 4 Derby’s in a row in the nineties with my after college bro’s. The first time was the most epic. Me and my URI roomie, met my El Cid roomie in Manhattan on a Wednesday and started driving to Louisville straight thru (13 hrs) to see our buddy who lived there working for UPS as a flight navigator. Three big guys in a Volkswagen Golf with a radar detector giving us ‘false positives’ …. drinking beers and dipping Cope and telling stories all the way.

We drove all night…..Once we got there, (it’s like like 7 am now), there was some womans walk going on in the park….so, as we’re driving slowly thru trying to find our friends apartment, there were like hundreds of woman waving at us saying “hi y’all, how ya’ll doing?” in the friendliest way….all of them!! Imagine like a hundred friendly woman waving at you at the same time…..being from the north, we're not used to that, and we're like ‘wtf is going on’???? This is great!!! We’re definitely getting laid this week end!

So, we finally get to our buddys’s apartment…it’s 8 am….and there’s bodies passed out all over his apartment, male & female all over the floor…we’re stepping over them and going ‘holy shit’ wtf??…that was Thursday and the party was on.

Friday was ‘The Oaks’. That’s the best time to go to the track IMO. Everybody is dressed up and civilized, it’s not crazy….about 10 races that day I think. You can watch the horses coming out of the stable. Magnificent beasts they are, and some magnificent woman too, all gussied up.

Saturday is Derby Day

So we end up in the infield the day of the race….(think of a big muddy mosh pit and everybody’s been drinking and partying for days) . My Lousiville buddy’s buddy, (an ANG F-16 pilot out of Buffalo), drove his RV down so we had a place to reconnoiter. That was key. Had 12 people in there and a solid place to stay.

Yes we all got laid somehow.

We went in subsequent years, the second year was good, after that, different people signed on to the trip…was never quite the same.

It was a real slop fest, but Justify was definitely the class of the field. Nice break out of the gate to get to the head of the pack and he never looked back.

Mike Smith's silks looked as white after he finished the race as they did at the start. Every horse and jock from about 3 lengths behind to the back of the pack looked like they'd just competed in one of those mudder races.

The first horse to win in 136 years that had not raced as a 2 year old. It has become conventional wisdom over the years that a horse has to have a few races under its belt to compete in the Derby, be interesting to see if any other trainers go that route moving forward.
