CPD Police Commander Killed Today

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/l...213-story.html

My count is 3 LEO killed this week. I had a moment of weakness today. I grabbed my son (LEO) and told him you better watch your ass when you go out tomorrow night. His response, will do Dad.

Don't confuse weakness with love or vice versa. It sounds like you've raised him well enough to trust him.

Condolences to the family of the commander as well as the rest of those struggling with what must seem at times to be a hopeless task of keeping a lid on the insanity that Chicago has been wallowed in since at least 1986 when I lived up there.

Many more have been shot or shot at in the same time.

RIP Commander

Thanks, just a gut reaction. Those numbers killed where across the country. Although Chicago is a disaster.

Consider wearing a vest off duty. Find an older Second Chance Monarch IIA in good condition. Originally came with a really thin 5"x8" kevlar wrapped titanium trauma plate which saved a few guys from ruptured aorta's caused by impacting the steering column while not wearing a belt. Dual pocket that could take an optional 8"x10". Get a newer carrier for the insert if it needs it. It will stop most of the handgun rounds you'll be shot with and SC IIA's even had a record in real life of stopping Level II rounds they were not rated for. They're as light/thin/flexable/comfortable/as you'll find, all Kevlar 129 and that will help you not have a problem wearing it all the time. You strap up, right? Carry a spare mag? A light? It's just a logical extension.

Chicago is a sewer, good they caught this guy, and still with the gun on him. Idiot. (Thankfully)

RIP to the fallen.

RIP

I caught an early report shortly after it occurred, they had very little info as to what had happened, or how seriously the officer had been hurt.

By the time I arrived home it was wall to wall coverage after learning it was a ranking district commander. I can still remember almost 40 years ago when the First Deputy Superintendent, outranked only the Superintendent himself, was shot and killed at the Marina Towers by some drunk that was bothering a couple of women he was with. Chicago hasn't had a cop shot for 7 years, not that these assholes running the streets haven't put in the effort on many occasions.

No surprise that the shooter yesterday was a known felon with at least 4 convictions. Apparently, he wasn't aware that his criminal background precluded him from possessing a gun.

Second Chance II
Had a friend while training folks down range in a shoothouse was double tapped in the back with an Uzi from 1' to 1 1/2' away. The first round was center mass and drove him forward with the second round impacting 1" above the bottom of the vest.

The vest wasn't rated for SMGs, but it stopped the bullets and saved his spine and life.

Vest work.
