buy that time as soon as you can afford. Being enlisted was cheap and the interest is super low if you cant afford to do it in those first 3 years of gov service. Also, depending on where you are based, you may be able to get a masters for free through one of the war colleges at distance learning sites saving you some coin. I just finished up my 2nd class at the Naval War College in the DC area and have one more to go. Cost was nothing and the classes are 30% or so civilians from across the gov.

Yes, retired at 53 and receiving FERS LEO pension with 20 yrs of service as 1811. Pension computed based on the 20 yrs + 13 yrs buyback of Army active duty time. Will draw ARNG retirement in addition upon reaching 60 y/o.
