Raise a glass

This Saturday is National Explosive Ordnance Disposal Day (https://www.timeanddate.com/holidays...e-disposal-day) and the focal point of the EOD Memorial Weekend. Names of the fallen will be read and remembered and new names will be added to the Wall. May they never be forgotten.

I have lost some friends over the years in this business but nothing was so poignant as when these EODMU-11 brothers of mine were killed in Iraq in April 2006 and then losing Jeff just over a year later.

There are few things in my life that have left the indelible mark that the Final Roll Call for these great men left with me. I will never forget the dead silence as their names were called, to no avail, only to be broken by the anguished cries of wives, children and friends. It’s one of those experiences that changes your perspective forever.

As promised, I will never forget.

My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate
I am the captain of my soul.

I just got back from the memorial.

It's hard to watch flags being presented to family.

It's important to remember.

We got there a little early and I had a chance to talk to a few of the students. I was impressed.

Above is the Memorial incase you missed the live stream via the EOD Warrior Foundation website.

There were some amazing items at the auction this year. If anyone on this site donated items, your artistry and talent is truly amazing.

The weather during the Memorial was much cooler than past years. It was in the high 60s low 70s, with the previous night being 47 deg.

During the Ball, Mr. Falke stated that this year is the highest year to date for scholarships paid and read a few applications that stood out. Mrs. Motsek mentioned that this year the EOD Warrior Foundation in conjunction with Wreaths Across America was able to section of a portion of the tree farm in Maine for each of the names on the EOD Wall. I wasn't aware until the Ball, but their farm trees are never cut down, only trimmed for the branches to make wreaths. In essence, it is a living memorial.

Truly amazing.

It may not be the first time (not sure if it is or not but first I remember), during the opening ceremonies of the Ball, they recognized not only the EOD Warriors, the Gold Star Families, but added White Star families and the ever enduring challenge and growing rate of suicides within the EOD Community of late.

D.C.- Thanks. Haven't seen a pic of Jeff in awhile. We were in the same class in 2003.
