Fears of military conflict between Venezuela and Colombia

I have a dog in this fight and will be watching this closely. Also, watch the Russians and Chinese in who they support.

Link here.

Fears of military conflict between Venezuela and Colombia as tensions over Maduro government escalate

The U.S.-led effort to force Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from office has moved into a new stage, with rising fears of military conflict between Venezuela and Colombia, and the activation of a 70-year-old mutual defense treaty among countries of the Western Hemisphere.

Members of the Inter-American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance agreed last week to invoke the 1947 pact, better known as the Rio Treaty, that allows joint actions ranging from economic sanctions to the use of military force and cutting transport and communications links. Foreign ministers of the treaty’s 19 member nations are due to meet later this month to decide which measures are necessary to stem the threat.

“If your neighbor’s house is burning down, do you stand and shout you should not intervene, or do you help your neighbor put out the fire?” Carlos ********, U.S. ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), said in a heated debate on the issue Wednesday.

Colombia has charged that Maduro, who announced military exercises on their shared border last week, is hosting and arming Colombian guerrillas who have threatened to reignite a terrorist campaign, including what Colombia’s intelligence service contends are plans to begin bombing central sites in Bogota, the capital, according to U.S. and Latin American officials.

The title of this thread is quote from a media outlet, not a factual statement.

It won't last long IF it happens, which I think is highly unlikely.

Be that as it may, there are well over a million Venezuelan refugees currently in Colombia. This has a significant impact on Colombia's economy and security situation. Something will have to be done in the not-too-distant future, but, I can't, nor can anyone else, come up with a viable solution absent the overthrow of Maduro. Colombia cannot for political reasons overthrow Maduro so that solution is left up to the Venezuelans, and thus far they haven't shown a real inclination or ability for the task.

The way China plays with the BRI, VZ could end up giving up their ports.

But there is no war there.

there isn't even a sand box.

No war; no sandbox; no comparison.

Crazy thought

hmmm, maybe the two countries could stage a bikini oil wrestling match to resolve the issue.

I am sure that more than a few who would be willing to pony up some bucks to see that on PPV

Maduro could use the proceeds from the match to improve the Venezuelan economy.

Yeah I'm not seeing the correlation lol. WaPo doing what WaPo does...

For the record, both Venezuela and Colombia are members of the Inter-American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance...so both have a seat at the table. Colombia can't pretend like they have all of their ducks in a row, they don't, though I will state that they've made some improvements. The jacked up situation in VZ has offered up young, hungry, and impressionable recruits to the ELN and FARC dissidents. This probably plays well with the members of the VZ government involved in narco-trafficking...but to say that there's fear of the two countries going to war? Ha.

Economics boys...economics. The U.S. doesn’t really have a dog in the fight, because we have essentially done all we can at this point. Our POTUS and admin have officially recognized the duly elected leader of Maduro’s opposition. Why, because Venezuela is an oil producing country. Columbia on the other hand is a cocaine producing country. However, we’ve supplied arms to both. I think USA will be a spectator on this one.

So steamroll the countries and give Venezuela to Texas and Colombia to Florida. At least they know how to manage the critical industries.

Not sure if “we” use large quantities of both products. I know I use one and not the other.

With Bolton's departure and the announcement of O'Brien to be the new National Security Adviser, I would expect to see the US taking a step back on putting pressure on Venezuela.

I hear that cocaine smells significantly better than oil...though my career as a rock star hasn't quite taken off yet, so I can't speak to the difference :)

Nope. Not worried at all nor could I care. VZ is in deep to the Russians and Chinese. The vig on that debt must be a real eye opener.
