I was going back and cleaning out my e-mail in box, and came across this again. I recently read that the A-1 had the highest loss rate of any fixed-wing aircraft in Nam - even higher than the F-105 "Thud" . Talk about flying low and slow!

I read My Secret War as a kid and loved them since.

I didn't realize how truly big they are till I stood next to one in a hanger in Houston.

if they spun them back up I'd happily go play contractor driving one.

The A-1 could carry the same payload as the B-17 and only had one engine. Have always liked that aircraft and even got to see one do a simulated ground attack mission at an airshow years ago. The pyrotechnics were excellent.
