First Contact

Remembering the old Recon adage: "Break Contact, Continue The Mission" :-)

Applied for SF as a young buck sergeant in 1965. Then deployed to Santo Domingo with the 82d, didn't get back to CONUS until Dec 65 when I discovered my orders for Training Group had come in last June. Cleared Division in one day (!), reported in to Training Group that evening, where I found the admin NCO on Staff Duty. "Kirschbaum? Oh yeah ... [shuffles through papers] we were getting ready to drop you for desertion!"

Great start, eh? But weapons training went fine, got my old 111 (later 11B) MOS back again. First assignment after 6 weeks of Spanish Language School in DC was to the 8th Group, where I had about a year and a half SD to the Jungle School with the rest of my team. A year SD in the Group HQ as S3 Plans NCO, finally made E6. Finally had to volunteer for Vietnam since apparently Panama was more important than Vietnam! Curious mysterious orders for some outfit called "SOA (CCC) 5th SFG". Asked around, no one would say anything except " Oh, it'll be interesting!"

Feb 1969-Feb 70: RT 10 and Hatchet Force Plt Sgt out of CCC, made E7, made it back without any significant scars. Yep, it was interesting.
70 - 73: On orders 3 times back to Vietnam and Special Projects, all of them cancelled. Miserable being back in America after years overseas and everyone hating me.
73-77: Broke contact after a marriage gone bad, Army ROTC at Univ of Mass (seems ROTC loved SF NCOs!), just as well since Abrams was trying to cut SF's throat and everyone was looking for a home. Very good assignment, thought I did some good up there despite that continued post-Vietnam era depression.
78-80: SF Detachment (Airborne) Europe, S3 plans and training. Good assignment, thoroughly enjoyed it and the people there (mostly), tour cut short for SGM Academy.
81-81: SGM Academy, 6 months.
81-82: My turn back in the barrel, back to the 82d as First Sergeant (didn't do well at all, wasn't used to NCOs I couldn't depend on), 1st Bde S2 NCO and finally S3 SGM when I (amazingly) made SGM. Didn't do well there either (sure did miss SF, I tell you).
83-84: Final assignment in Corps Automation Management Office, XVIII Airborne Corps (turns out I had a knack for computers and programming).
1984: Retired in the Fayetteville area after 23 years active service, decided to try my hand at "independent computer programmer", been doing that (and computer maintenance) ever since until full retirement a few years ago.

Thanks for accepting my application.

Prior service Air Force Security Forces 7 years Active Duty. I also did 7 years in the Air Force Reserves as Security Forces as well. A couple weeks I just finally got out of IRR.

I've been working as a DoD Security Contractor now for the last 7 years in the nuclear enterprise.

I'm glad to be here.
