Like Gavin, I grew up on the West Coast, but I've spent most of my adult life in Japan. If you've read James Clavell's Shogun (or seen the movie), most of that took place with 20 minutes of where I am.

Kinda what started my Civil War History obsession was reading " The Killer Angels" by Michael Shaara.

It was between the 3rd and 4th reading sometime about 7 years ago I said "Fuck, I need some reading glasses"

The 2 DVD Gettysburg movie script was that book untouched. Tom Berenger, Sam Elliot & Jeff Daniels were awesome. The whole cast really.

According to Wikipedia, the first draft was 2300 pages, and the second draft was 1700.

I do a lot of research into local history for most of my books, Shawnee has an interesting history, Shenandoah Valley is thought to be an old Shawnee word meaning, "Beautiful Daughter of the Stars". Sherando, where I live is named for a chief Shawnee defeated, which in some ways created the Shawnee people. Route 11 which cuts through the valley was known as "The Great Warrior Path" for years. But in the end, my people kicked your people's ass, then we got our ass kicked, and now we're all Americans. One big happy, miss-matched, mongrel family.

Reading makes me sleepy too. I know where he's coming from. There's still a book marker between 1152 & 1153.

I grew up in Baltimore Maryland - I have been in and around Fort McHenry more times than I could count. My family had an original Baltimore Newspaper printing of the National Anthem that was donated to a museum after my grandfather died (my grandmother didn't want any fighting between the brothers over who would get it).

I used to "play" on the railroad tracks when Oriole Park at Camden Yards was just "Camden Yards" - The Orioles and Colts still played in Memorial Stadium. I hung around the inner harbor when Harbor Place was just - well, it was just open land around the inner harbor. When I was a kid, my parents and grandparents must have took me to every Civil War battlefield there was within a half-days drive of Baltimore.

I have been really involved in the genealogy thing since I was a kid. I would listen to all the family stories (weird I know) and it always amazed me.

Flash forward, I'm now kind of the family historian and they come to me all the time to ask me questions.

My application was recently accepted for the Sons of the American Revolution and myself and several others are being "inducted?" into a local chapter on Monday.

I have family on both sides that fought in the Revolutionary War and I have family on both sides that fought against each other. History is amazing.

If anyone ever needs any help with this kind of stuff reach out. I do it for friends all the time. I tell people to be ready though cause you never know what you're going to find out.

Grew up on the family farm since 1921. The House was built in 1848 and has some history, overall a great place to grow up back then. Iron ore furnace not too far away that was lightly defended by the South. The farm still has some rock fortifications left on a hill overlooking the river. I guess it was a scouting position. Luckily Sherman went past our Valley and instead went down the Shenandoah Valley burning the breadbasket of the South. Family wise, typical English blood. Supposedly a relative of ours farmed "Jenkins" Hill, was evicted when they built the Capital

That is Awesome! Congrats on your induction. I'm much the same in our family. Younger Nieces, Nephews and now my Daughter is coming to me asking questions about the old family they never met and wanting to know more.

There's only 3 other siblings of mine, me being the youngest that are the last of our generation. I'm glad to pass it on. It's almost like Genesis...this one begat this one, etc.

My cousin did a military history of my family on my father's side. It's about 90 pages if I remember correctly. Traced us all the way back to my people landing on the coast of Georgia as inmates of a British penal colony prior to the Revolutionary War. Found out I am a direct descendant of a US President during that research. Cool book. Copies of letters home and stuff included, mostly from the Civil War. My Confederate ancestors were not well educated judging by their letters home. Interesting stuff.
