Anniversary of U2 Shootdown over Russia

Good read with with interesting facts that aren't generally known.

Powers showed incredible composure after his plane was crippled.

Amazing story.

Cass had some interesting posts about working with that program during that time frame. I can't remember if it was a thread to itself or not, I'll see if I can find it.

The lesson of the incident, as Eisenhower’s press secretary James Hagerty put it, was “Don’t get caught.”

Solid advice.

For those of you who are still actively flying as civilian pilots or as military pilots and you are around Southwest Virginia......Stop in for fuel at the Lonesome Pine Airport, Wise, VA (military choppers and Osprey's come in there from time to time for fuel) and go into the control center and you will find a small memorial display for Gary in the lobby. Gary's hometown that he grew up in is Pound, VA/Wise county where I grew up also, is about 10-15 miles away. Only claim to fame for that little town. His sister was married to our local shoe repairman we had back then. He is a true Hero to all of us back there.

CASS and I exchanged a few PM's before he passed away, about Gary. One Hero voicing his respect for another Hero.

There is a memorial plaque to Gary in front of the Letcher County courthouse in nearby Whitesburg, KY. Apparently he has a connection to Letcher. Sad to say many locals probably don't realize a native was involved in an international incident. Also Pound was made famous when the town tried to outlaw dancing at a local bar and the case went to the Va Supreme Court.

Great article, SB.
Also great to see the Cass (RIP, sir) threads on this topic.

That's because Gary was born in Jenkins, Ky...in Letcher county about 2 miles from the VA Border. He family moved to Pound right after he was born.

Thanks for posting, just checked it out on foreflight; sad that the airport deli is closed permanently as it is nice to grab a bite, like the one at CGE. I will have to put this airstrip on the list.

Went through all of that and died flying a news helicopter less that 20 years later.

This is incredible history. My dad worked as an engineer for Pratt & Whitney for 40 years after service in Korea. As a junior engineer his first project for the company was the J58 engine used in the SR-71. He literally had no idea what project he was working on at the time because the project was so secret that all the employees were compartmentalized for security purposes (Given the Chinese cybertheft of the C-17 maybe a process to return to). I remember as a kid my dad raving about the aerodynamic performance of the U-2, and about the genius of Kelly Johnson's "Skunkworks" at Lockheed. May Francis Gary Powers continue to Rest In Eternal Peace.
