Tattoo Question

I got some new ink on Saturday, a nice piece on my inner arm. Everything seemed fine Saturday and Sunday. I went running yesterday and when I got back, my elbow decided to swell up. My tattoo seems pretty normal, a bit red but not streaky or anything. I donít have any fever either. Tattoo is sensitive to the touch but not painful.

Is this swelling normal? I havenít really heard of this before so I figured Iíd come to the experts.

How large is the swelling? How close in proximity is your tattoo to the swelling?

Generally your body sees a new tattoo as a wound, and it will react as such. This usually results in swelling and possible bruising (especially if your artist has a heavy hand).

Are you following aftercare instructions? Some artist recommend antibiotic ointment some don't. Could be a reaction to ink color?
I concur with Maverick.

Itís not terribly large. Itís not large enough that someone else would notice. Itís about 3 inches away from my tattoo.

Iíve been following the proscribed aftercare...soap and then lotion. The tattoo is starting to flake and doesnít look bad.

I was wondering if the running would have played a role in the swelling?

Swelling is normal. I worked out when getting my sleeve so it is highly unlikely it is infected. Get some antibiotics if youíre worried.

Swelling can happen and is not abnormal, in most cases.

One particular color on my sleeve was particularly sensitive to sun exposure and the skin would swell noticeable for about 2 years. Then it stopped.

Be careful with tats. I have none so I can't speak from experience, but I can relate what happened to my stepson with his tat. Shortly after he got his first one from a reputable artist, it got infected and he developed Hep C. Drs. said it was from the tat. It was cured after intense treatment, but he was warned it may cause possibly liver or renal failure. FF 25 years. He has been in the hospital six out of the last eight weeks for fluid retention and...liver and renal failure. He has been put on the liver transplant list and is waiting for one to come up. If the good Lord had wanted us to have a tattoo or put needles in our arm, we would have been born with them.

The same could be said about surgical intervention.

Tattoo from the "Magic Dragon" outside of Ft. Dix in 1978. The tattoo developed some "holes" for a while and irritated a 9 foot tall drill sgt. ...other than that the yellow and green colors were sensitive to sunburn. Now it's just fine and one can hardly tell what it is.

I need some ink work done. Basically to cover 2 older faded 80's tats. Upper arms above elbows.

What's a good cover. Solid tribal, dark ink?

All great ideas...but it's gotta be dark to cover.
