Downed WWII pilot's remains returned

The remains of a WWII pilot who crashed in Germany in 1945 and whose bones were found embedded in a tree last year were finally returned to Washington State for burial with full honors. BZ to the POW/MIA investigators who figured out who he was. I have to believe it was an interesting challenge to match him to a particular missing airman.

I'm on the other side of the fence on this subject. It disturbs me when guys are dug up and moved. He was resting in peace. No need for an attention seekers to go desecrate his grave. No need for the family to get a handful of bones generations later

I get your point, but I disagree.

Americans are a sentimental lot, myself included. If I were to die in a far away land, I'd want my body repatriated ASAP. I love my country, and want to be here regardless of my condition. As far as his earthly remains, I'm sure, based on my beliefs, that he was no longer there. All we have to go on is what he would have wanted when he was alive, and what his family wants now.

As a cargo plane crewmember, some of the missions that made me most proud of my job was repatriating lost men and women of the US armed forces who died in a foreign land. They were the most emotional flights, and particularly arrivals I've ever flown on the C-17.

If I turned into a smoking hole in the middle east, the last thing I would want is to stay there.
