I think the key is having an accelerant and fuel. The cotton acts as the fuel and the vaseline etc....

That's why I tried the wood pellets, They are very compressed and I thought that would provide a lot of fuel over time.

Or you could learn how to build a fire when it's raining.

I'll hold a period of instruction the next time I see you TFG, better yet Arden can show you.

[QUOTE=PS: Denatured alcohol at Home Depot by the gallon or quart is cheep. You could spring for a bottle of Everclear grain alcohol, very spendy but it is the same thing as denatured, only you CAN drink it... Dual purpose item I suppose :)[/QUOTE]

Whats funny is that the biker community has been all over this - alchohol stoves and white liquor are a staple in a lot of saddlebags - it gives a reason for having alchohol in an open container

If a LE officer really really really wanted to be a dick he could cause you some grief if its in a different bottle like a plastic coke bottle

Ref food for BOB's - I take a page from our old E&E practice; MRE peanut butter and cheese spread. Quiet, good fat and calories. Another point for me is that it can be shared with the quadrupeds in our "pack" if necessary/desired

Take a peek at these bags from SOG. They bought some manufacturer and now offer a very nice piece of kit, IMHO. Great quality, good zippers. I almost bought one, even though I do not need one. It is designed almost exactly like the 5.11 tactical Rush 72, which costs 4 x as much as this one.

SOG barrage at WalMart

^^^Thanks TFG. I did not know they sold SOG gear. I bought one of their tabletop knife sharpeners at a retail sporting goods place and paid $10 more for it than Wallymart is selling it for!! It works great and I love it, but damn, only $17 at WM?! They have a lot of SOG gear even body armor shells, knives, hatchets. I had no idea. Thx!

I've been using those for a few years now, stored in small waterproof match tube we get in our ration packs.

They work great. 3-5 minutes burn time per cotton ball

One thing I learned while visiting the US recently was to do the same(vaseline) but consider using makeup pads(larger spark target).

One of the fellas had a recipe that was dipping makeup pads in a mix of kerosene and candle wax/parrafin.

Worked really well.

-----

In terms of fire starter I keep waterproofed lighters, matches, the aforementioned cotton balls/vaseline as well as fire steel.

The same fellas I ran into use REALLY large fire steel for the easier gross muscle skill required.

The example of having your hands held in a chilly bin(beer cooler) filled with ice water for a few minutes(to simulate being cold/wet/tired) barely left gross motor skills.

The bigger fire steel(instead of usual small sized one) to start the fire combined with the bigger spark target(makeup pads instead of smaller cotton balls) made good points in terms of effective prior planning and worst case scenario practice.

Just some recent add ons I learned to add to some good existing stuff.

Cheers.

I just picked up a Steripen while visiting the US:

http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/pr...uctId=18392436

Pretty cheap compared to what stuff costs down here.

The key point seems to be the requirement for high output lithium AA batteries, alkaline batteries might not be enough to do the job.

Picked it up to complement the small ceramic Katadyn's we have.

That steri pen water purifier looks bad ass (if it works as advertised). I just bought one of the 5.5" fire steel rods from Amazon and it works great. I was lighting fire on the front stoop over the weekend.

Oh, Chimo... fuck you and jafo for what your thinking.

For fire starter materials I really like dryer lint. The mix of cotton, nylon, polyester (natural and synthetics) gives a tinder and oil start that works great. I suppose you could even dip that in vaseline. But I keep it in a water proof container and it will handle a bit of moisture. I also keep a small bit of pine wood (usually from a 2"x4" scrap) that I can split by batoning with a knife. I can control the size of the splits, from toothpicks to thicker pieces and make up any needed sizes of kindling. Being pine it flat out lights.

Throw one of these into the pack, along with a pack of cotton balls, or the makeup pads (I like the idea of a big target for when you have limited fine motor control, like when you're shivering uncontrollably from impending hypothermia)

Generic petroleum jelly in a tube for 2 or 3 bucks.

Not that I would know from experience but be sure to keep the vaseline in a ziploc bag unless you want everything else in the pack to be soft and silky smooth (and greasy).

Their kind of spendy, but this thing rocks in the winter time. I actually like the seek outside our kifaru (box type) better as their a little easier to set up, but this is a bit lighter.

I was practicing with my new ferro rod and used some neosporin with a cotton ball. The petro jelly base worked as well.
