The subordinate units are from established Infantry and Engineer Regiments.

Not sure about the lineage of the SFAB.

As far as the 'tab' goes- its like the 'Mountain Tab' above the 10th Mountain patch- just part of the design and not a 'qualification tab' like SF or Ranger.

I do agree that giving ANYONE a beret remotely close to a Special Ops unit is a vast mistake. They should issue the shit brown ones they considered before taking the black beret...

Or maybe give them a nice PC with their rank sewn on it, but I know that's probably just old school crazy talk.

Special Forces Stolen Heritage Flap Takes A Surprising Turn

Apparently the petition hit got the General's attention to no avail.

I remember clearly the shitstorm in the early eighties when the long tab was authorized. Us, candy stripers were directed to wear the full 7th flash.
Some of us that were close to the BN's and others did not do so until CSM Ivan I. saw us and made it clear we'd better have made that change the next time he sees us. It was an "uncomfortable" time. Shit. I remember being shocked when I reported to GP that the beret was worn not only by unqual'd individuals but also by non airborne personnel.
I'm wondering if this disapproval by the SF community will make it to POTUS and if so what his response would be. One would think POTUS Is aware of the developments of these units but I don't believe he would take the pushback from the community as lightly as the General seems to have.

Ivan was working for Bragg Range Control around ten years ago. He would come out to ranges, and I would talk to him, spend time with him, etc. He would ask questions about our tactics, etc, in the shoot house, that sort of thing.

The young guys on the team asked me one time "Why are you talking to that old man so much? Who cares what they did when he was SF?"

I started to try to tell them about CSM Ivanov, and the presence he was when I was a young SF guy...and then I realized "What's the point?" So, I told them I like to talk to people...

Well the update at the bottom of that link says that GEN Milley has now said that the beret will be dark brown now and not any shade of green but the unit patch with tab on top will stay.

Quote:
GEN Mark A. Milley
This is General Milley and I want to assure everyone that the color of the SFAB Beret will be brown and will not be green or any shade of green. It is derived from the Brown Infantry Beret worn by many Armies. There was no intent to dishonor or misappropriate the Green Beret of US Army Special Forces and all it stands for. Second, I should not have said that SF “never” advised the ANA or ISF. That is not true. The majority of advising to the ANA and ISF conventional units was done by conventional US Army and Marine units while SF focused on the ANA Commandos, Iraqi Special Forces and other specialized units. All of which were part of the ANA or the ISF. Also, there were some SF teams that did advise ANA and Iraqi conventional units. I was obviously incorrect and I apologize. Finally, I ask that people support this concept. SF is way overstretched and this is an effort to professionalize and institutionalize the conventional US Army advisory capability. I appreciate everyone’s comments and feedback.

So, I'm not sure if he changed his mind and is going with a different color now, or if he is fucking colorblind.

And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

I am the captain of my soul.

I ran into him at McKellar's some years ago and many years since he was my CSM and holy shit he walked right up to me and said Rambo ? I was called that by him and others not for being such a hard charger but because I did a pretty good Sylvester Stallone (Rambo) version of " I wish I was back at Bragg now sir " whenever we were away.
Now, when I think about my interactions with MSG Carlos P. I laugh my f'in ass off. One story told of the interaction between the two of them is just fucking classic. Imagine CP's response when Ivan asked at a staff meeting for everyone to look at themselves in the mirror when you get out of the shower and see if you think you need some remedial PT. Good times

Everyone except me. I'm the only non-operator, non-badass guy left in the Army.
