Some years ago at the American Legion that I was a member of there was an old timer who fought at Normandy. He went in on D-Day+3 and would often bring pictures and tell stories over beers. One story that I will never forget is when he said that the Germans would shoot at our medics regardless of them being identified with red cross armbands. I asked him what they did when they saw German medics in the field and he replied "we shot their asses".
