Thumbs up Cobra Kai (YouTube Red original series)

I saw an ad for this series about 6 months ago and made a note to check it out. I wasn't expecting very much.

It takes place 34 years after the events of The Karate Kid. Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence in the movie respectively, reprise their roles.

Daniel is now a successful car dealership owner and Johnny is down on his luck trying to get his life back together.

This series super impressed me. It was billed as a comedy/drama, so there were some laughs to be had, and some decent gags that you would get if you've seen the original movie. It has been updated to include current issues like cyber-bullying and the like,

Highly recommend. Each episode is between 20 and 40 minutes long and all 10 are available to watch. The first two are free on YouTube, then it makes you sign up for the paid service. I signed up for the 30-day free trial and plan to cancel.

Ralph Macchio is also a recurring character on the HBO show The Deuce, playing a vice officer.

I've heard this is a pretty good show, and it has to be better than the movie it's based on. I've always thought The Karate Kid was way overrated.

We watched the first two free episodes on YouTube.

Google/Youtube did a really solid job.

And I have to admit they have a well integrated effort to try and upsell people to pay for the Youtube Red subscription.

Writing is solid.

Acting is pretty good.

“Looks” well done on a low budget.

Soundtrack and using a sh!tty old 80’s Firebird/Trans-Am is excellent.

“Bad is good, good is bad”.....it’s like my childhood got mashed up with a nicer version of the Stranger Things “upside down”.

This could be a new genre by recycling 80’s/90’s childhood into darker/more cynical and a little more adult themed content.

After watching the first two episodes, I'm trying to figure out whether they're glorifying the 80's or making fun of the decade, and whether they're bashing SJW/PC culture or attempting to demonstrate the superiority of that philosophy.

All of the above. I watched the first two episodes, and had to laugh at Johnny Lawrence's attitude of having never left the 80's. The millennial aura is projected quite well as those of us "aging" folks view the snowflake/participation-trophy generation.

Ralph Macchio in Karate Kid vs. Kurt Thomas in Gymkata: who wins?

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Whoever wins has to face Dwight Schrute for an epic ass beating.

Hey Spinner - remember the Cobra Kai dojo's back in 70s -80s, they used to do demos at Buffalo Days and other local festival thingys.

Neither...Steven Seagal as a cook/Navy SEAL beats Macchio and VanDamme every time. It's the hair gel.

Dwight Schrute would annihilate them both with the Malachi Death Touch.

I was vaguely familiar with Cobra Kai, guy I knew back in high school was into it. Never really knew that much about it.

There was one that a few friends got involved with, Chung Moo Quan, that was little more than a cult. It got to the point that I didn't want to hang out with a couple of them because they were so obsessed with the whole thing.

The leader and founder of it was a Korean emigre by the name of John C. Kim, a quick google check showed he passed away a couple of years ago. Him and several of his instructors were convicted of fraud and tax evasion back in the 80s, and the schools eventually shut down.

I loved it. I was expecting cheese, but it was actually very well done. Good acting, good writing, and it makes fun of pc/sjw thinking.

Winter is here again oh Lord,
Haven't been home in a year or more
I hope she holds on a little longer
Sent a letter on a long summer day
Made of silver, not of clay
I've been runnin' down this dusty road

I've been trying to make it home
Got to make it before too long
I can't take this very much longer
I'm stranded in the sleet and rain
Don't think I'm ever gonna make it home again.

I'd have to give Lieutenant X a fighting chance as well.

None of them can hold a candle to Chiun, master of the dark arts.
