Originally, Frank Castle was a Sergeant in Vietnam.

My favorite origin story of the Punisher was where he was on a firebase in Viet-fuckin-Nam and the Cong was overrunning his position. Sgt Castle made a pact with some dark entity to survive the encounter and return home to his family ---- the price was as yet to be determined at the time.

HA! Now we see some of the formative influences of DD0311!

Garth Ennis

DD0311.......Ennis not only wrote for Punisher (such as that series Born), but also wrote Preacher (now a TV show), a story arc for Hellblazer (Constantine the movie) and many others. Being a WW2 history buff......he wrote a series called Battlefields.....with mini stories from different perspectives during WW2. Pretty awesome stuff. You might enjoy it.

Back to the thread.......on Episode 3 right now......The cliche of the crazy vet not withstanding......entertaining for sure.

Into EP 8 and I'm struggling to get past the "crazy war veterans" theme and the evil Blackwateresque CIA death squad nonsense, but I am still watching.

There's a lot of really stupid shit that ruins an extremely promising show for me.

Maybe they should just hand that show to Christopher Nolan and let him unfuck it, like he did with Batman.

That was my point when I posted this thread. Great action, pointless politicizing.

Its one thing if they base a show around politics...like something David Simon would put out. But a comic book? I liked this series but that story line was needless, and seems to be par for the course with all the Netflix super hero stuff. They have one good plot line but jack the entire thing up with sub lines that are distracting.

I like the hideout and the family story so I'm going to keep watching. I'm giving it a pass because it's fantasy comic book land. At some point Frank Castle is going to machine gun the fuck out of somebody.

Binged it this weekend. Good show. I also liked the concept but like many here I get frustrated with these cliched scenes. I guess any show that can keep you watching a complete season pretty much in one sitting has to have something going for it. But like many shows I thought it got close to jumping the shark a few times.

Overall I say sit down and watch it with the kids! :-)

A few non-spoiler questions.

Is the MP-5 as commonly used as it is on this series? I can see it being used for CQB but I'm fairly certain I saw it in other scenes that were not CQB.

Holding a weapon tilted to the side. I know it has been called gangsta or Hollywood so I was a little surprised to see it being done in this series. But I've recently seen it a lot on Live PD. I can understand doing it when cramped for space and other scenarios but I also remember it being taboo in shooting circles.

Possible spoilers below...............

The man beatings taken in any Hollywood series are of course ridiculous at times but they seemed way over the top in this one. It could take many months or years to even coming close to recovering from some of the ass whippings given on this show. Entertaining? Yes. But I just expect more from series' these days.

The female agent screwed up everything she touched so it seems a little bit of a high expectancy to ask the the audience to keep buying in to it.

Just finished S1. Was waiting for some more of that cartel hit that starts the season off but hey there's likely a season 2.

I mentioned MP5s to some guys who were swat. They called me a dinosaur. Based on THAT? I guess they have fallen into disfavor. Best to get a young guys experience though.

The show continues the Hollywood troupe of "Agency and contractors bad." The rest is mildly entertaining but the premise lacks creativity.

I binge watched the first season twice.

So, needless to say, I am ready for season 2.

Ep. 1 looks like we're getting into another love story. Needless to say, the Punisher Van is still running strong!

They need a new military adviser. They called SERE "S.E.R.E" school. That stood out as such a simple thing to get right that it distracted me for a few minutes..... Did they really say that? I kept thinking.

Sometimes it's the most simple mistake that are the most distracting in TV/Movies..lol
