Free Solo

A movie that's maybe flying under everybody's radar is 'Free Solo' No, it's not about Hans being in jail, it's about free climber Alex Honnold and his bid to be the first person to free climb El Capitan in Yosemite NP.
Great movie, showing the dedication and resolve of these athletes.
And the parallels I saw between the military and what he was doing he even put into words towards the end. The dynamic between he & his girlfriend (hot but super annoying, my wife disliked her)were much like mil life as well.
Anyway, this is a documentary, filmed by Climber/filmmaker Jimmy Chin, and if you know his work, you know he is spectacular at his job.
It's only in select theaters, but if it comes to your town, go see it, especially on the big screen. This movie was meant for huge, right in your face scenery and keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Wait for it to hit the big screens here (OCONUS) in Dec...just listened to his interview with Joe Rogan recently about "Free Solo", as well. I'd say it is worth the time and gives some background to his (Alex's) thinking and personality.

Saw it on IMAX a few weeks ago. Loved it. Alex is considered to be a robotic superhuman even in climbing circles, and I think this movie finally gave us optics into the psychology of the guy.

Link to thread on a pretty wide-ranging climbing site, input from some of the filming and rigging crew (including MikeyS who was the cameraman shown turning away during one of the thin-face crux sections - his quote: "Yep, Alexey that is me. I will be forever known as the camera man that can't even watch what he is shooting... At least they didn't put the part in there of me crying due to the stress.").

http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-fo...1266/Free-Solo

Not everyone is gonna want to wade through the entire thread, but there are some interesting peripheral vids and a lot of community and friend perspectives tucked in it.
As MB said, the guy seems to be the definition of an outlier; while many feel others like Michael Reardon and John Bachar capable of the technical aspects of a climb like this, Alex brings the head part to a whole 'nother level.

Haven't seen it yet.

Can't wait to get up on those walls in May, it's hard to believe he free solo'd freerider, just insane.

Honnold is on a whole different level. He's super friendly and seems like a solid kid in person. He has the right mentality and vision for this thing, but it's also clear he's not stopping anytime soon.

My take away from the movie was clear though, he needs to dump his girlfriend before she either kills him from novice moves on the wall or destroys his mental state and he falls.
That chick is toxic for his continued survival on big walls imo

You gonna cruise up some El Cap? I'll be in the LA area working on my 5.difficult over in J-Tree until Tioga Pass opens. Not cool enough for the climbs in the valley yet.

Watched this last night. Really enjoyed it. Camera work is almost as impressive as his climb. Some of those shots had my stomach flipping.

And yeah, that dude is wired differently than the rest of us. Amazing resolve and skill.

I "free-climbed" a wet 10m cliff once in my 20s.

Scared the absolute living fuck out of myself, although it would have been a relatively easy climb with the most basic climbing kit.

I'm glad there are still purists out there pushing the boundaries, but I recognise that it is not something I can do.

Watched it last week on NatGeo. As awesome as it was watching on my 60" TV, I would love to see it in IMAX. I can't imaging the butterflies I'd get seeing some of those shots on a screen that big.

Yup. I was watching it by myself, and actually said out loud, "what the fuck is she doing?" when she started getting into his head the night before his first attempt.

Haven't seen it, but probably will at some point.

I used to do a fair bit of rock climbing until some shitstain stole my rack. Notice that I pointed my old climbing rack, consisting of bunches of safety equipment like nuts, hexes, bongs, and stoppers. There was even a couple of pitons and a great Chinouard rock hammer. This was in the days prior to automatic cams, and the other new, fancy stuff. The point is that if I was doing what I should be doing, I wouldn't die when I fell. I knew that I would fall, because.... gravity and muscle failure. Duh.

Makes me think of Dan Osman. Probably not the same level of stupid risk-taking, but still, free climbing.

I hope that this gentleman continues to live. But, should he continue freeclimbing, he will likely fall one day. Because gravity.

My common sense just doesn't let me get supportive of this kind of activity.

I watched it today. The dude has a backbone of steel. It was one of those shows that made me feel *tired* when it was over....
