5th Group bringing back the Vietnam Era Flash

Not my Group but seems like something that might inspire some opposing viewpoints-

I think they should have never changed it to the all black to begin with. But since it has been that way for almost 30 years now, I don't see the reason to bring it back.

Hec, probably more than half the guys in 5th Group these days did not even graduate High School until after 9/11.

Kind of like the Black Beret for the Rangers. They should have never made the whole Army go to the Black Beret and then switch the Rangers over to the tan beret. But, now that the Rangers have had the tan beret for 15 years, no point of going back.

IMHO, the US Army in general has wasted too much time, money and effort on changing uniforms, headgear, patches, etc.

One thing I admire about the USMC , is that they have stayed pretty consistent.

I wore that flash with the VN colors in B/1/5. It's bad ass. I'm glad to see it.

I was in A/3/5 for several yrs when good 'ol Gen (then COL) Guest made the change. A lot of VN Vets who were still around were NOT happy.

A stated, never shoulda changed it the first place...for what?? A bullet on an OER...pffft

I suppose the 5th SFG flash with the OEF / OIF stripes, dagger, and V were just and excuse to spend some OPFUND bucks

Never saw anybody wear it, other than COL Mulholland and CSM Baer at the "Flash Ceremony" at CJSOTF-AP around July 03.

I've got a pic of it on the computer at home... at work now.

Change for the sake of change seems to be the norm. When do we get yet another version of cammies?

C'mon HM, we know it's not our guys...it's our "illustrious" leadership...or should I say our very lacking leadership...At the NCA level...

Problem is that the guys who wore the new version added some long hard history to it.
It was all black originally.

Stripes supposed to represenrt 1st and 7th who were the first guys there.

Should never have been changed.

Now comes a pissing contest about whose honor and integrety is biggest.

This blows.

Mike you make a good point, but do you think adding the colors detracts from the efforts of those over the last 15 years?

I don't understand this at all.
I wore the VN flash when I got to 5th Group and was there when we changed back to the black and white flash.
This seems like a slap to the guys that have been fighting for the last 15 years.
Hard lessons were learned in VN and hard lessons have been learned for the last 15 years in Iraq/Afghanistan/etc.
This seems like shithead senior leadership run amok.
No one in the Group today fought in VN. I can only think of a handful of guys around at USASFC or USASOC that are VN SF vets.
This is simply stupid.

I always thought the Stripes were representative of the South Vietnam Flag. ?

So I have this fifty year old flat green hat with a cut edge 5th Group flash sewn on. It's the one I wore in RVN and on the Hill and I plan on wearing it to the ceremony at Campbell in March. I'm going out of curiosity; just what is a "reflash" ceremony? From what I've read the plans call for us old farts to stand in formation behind the troops for the ceremony. Just seeing that formation alone should be worth the trip.

Sounds great Farmer. Both for you to meet the new generation, and for them to meet you.

You should be whispering into their ears during the ceremony, giving them hell. "I was killing commies before you guys were even born, back when it was hard and we still had to shine our boots every night" or "I was dealing with Iranians back when it was hard and before we had drones doing half the work for us."

My all time favorite, from a Msgt giving me a "council " session:

In regards to the topic -

I was a 7th Grouper, so obviously don't have the emotional ties that you 5th Group guys have to this subject. But IMO they never should have changed it in the first place, but once they did, they should have learned from the outcry then, and not even considered changing it "back" after 15 years of history under the current flash.

For those of you that have history under both flashes I look at it as getting a painful divorce and then remarrying your ex-wife 15 years later because you got tired of the current one. May sound stupid, but I think the emotions for both are similar.

Man, you guys are a bunch of fags. It's not like a General gave the whole Army a green beret

Lol. We were lucky. IIRC it was an option that was on the table.
