If you visit- I would go very late in evening. To be specific- early morning- 0300.

It is not Zeus at Olympia, and because of the incongruity of the settings- I would say it is even more powerful. Especially late at night.

The area is not a heavy business area- there is large college across the boulevard. Next to the park is some apartment building. It is on perimeter of a large park, with grass fields.

Because it is not at a National Memorial area, or similar setting- the name of statue- 'Guardians', it is superb.

It reminds me of old statue or markers from barbarian tribes in some manner because of this.

Because in this wide area, very quite at night, almost deserted, there is not a single thread of martial 'character'. It is obviously a prosperous area, college, shopping area, trees- very pretty.

But in the midst of all this- separate from all of the complexes, is this statue. And it is not the typical heroic memorial statue- the General on horseback, or the Soldiers marching forward.

It is the 2, and they are at war from their uniforms and weapons not parade dress like a General on horseback, and if not in battle already they are about to be. And they are back to back- victory or defeat they have made their move- there will be no retreating. Fighting to the end.

And late at night, seen from 100 meters away- indeed they are guarding the entire area. Separate from it all but they stand out in a striking manner.

I like the incongruity. Without appearing flippant with the reference- were aliens to invade the earth, the statue and location would give a wise one pause- in the peaceful, completely non-military region, there is this statue. Almost a warning to not make too many assumptions about the society and culture from the surrounding areas.

I have gone there a few times late in evening, when I am driving nearby. On one night, there is bottle of good whiskey, almost empty but maybe 2 fingers remaining, and tin of tobacco- very carefully placed on one of the Memorial plaque.

Regards,

So apparently the afghan national that sheltered Marcus Luttrell after the engagement that resulted in the death of his teammates has come out talking crap on Luttrell and basically calling him a liar. Also some marine officer has some sort of bone to pick. Thoughts?

Nothing changes the fact that 19 Americans died that day and others were wounded looking for them.
