Packing List question - KAIA

Current list sent by the recruiter. Didn't know if anyone has deployed/returned from KIA recently and could comment on any additional needs.

I know from reading various threads on here wall socket adapters are a necessity in case you have to share one outlet. I know a bunch of you recommended Netflix/Amazon Prime memberships. Going through customs and whatnot, is it easier to bring a gaming console or just purchase one when I get there? I'll be honest, the kids were excited when they found out I might have to leave the PS4 behind for them. LOL

1) Passport, 4 x Passport photographs, Driverís License
2) Cash for purchasing items on site ($200)
3) Tactical wear: cargo pants, shirts, belts, hiking boots
4) Razor/ spare blades, toothpaste and toothbrush, shaver foam / gel
5) Towel x2, Hand Towel x2
6) T-Shirts x4
7) Underwear x4
8) Cold Weather Socks (xyz provides socks however they are not cold weather)
9) PT Gear (clothing must be tasteful and cannot have sexually suggestive slogans)
10) Running shoes
11) shower shoes
12) Deodorant, baby wipes
13) Sunscreen
14) Alarm Clock and watch
15) Flashlight
16) Batteries
17) Laptop
18) Movies
19) Headphones
20) Memory Stick
21) Sunglasses/protective eye wear
22) Hats, gloves
23) Malaria medication
24) OTC meds and prescription meds

(The PX is currently well stocked. However this could change as the drawdown continues)

Weather appropriate clothing tailored to each season:

Cold and wet weather gear: prepare for heavy snowfall during the winter, rainfall during the spring, as well as

hot/arid summers

**The power source is 110v

+1 for Amazon Prime. Easiest way hands down for most things there.

eta: The US PX there sucks, but between the Italian and German ones you can probably find just about anything you need on base without having to use Amazon that much. I'd be surprised if they didn't have PS4s in one of them, or the electronics store there. Hardship posting

I haven't been to KIA but I always take a power strip, $500-$1000, and 2-3 weeks of supplements. Also look to purchase a mobil wifi once you hit the ground IMO

Jesus you brought back a flash of bad memories with your thread title.

Thought you were referring to having to pack-up a buddy's things and sending them home to his family.

Worst expereince of my life. Especially when the GS-0 contractor mail clerk then made us unpack every single bit of it in front of everyone and catalogue it all while they dug through it for "security concerns". Disgraceful. One of USSFPA's buddies actually happened to walk in at the time that me and one of my teammates were giving the clerk a piece of our mind.

Sorry, soapbox over.

Been to KIA. Total cakewalk locale. You'll be GTG.

If the PX is stocked, why pack 4 towels? Those take up a lot of space and you can just buy some when you get there.

If you're dead set on having a PS4 you could always buy the new slim. It's so small and would fit in your bag easily (if you do like KS11 says and don't bring a ton of towels).

Also Huawei makes a Mobile Hotspot that has an ethernet port to turn into a router, and also is a small battery charger (like 5000mah or something like that).

+1 on the extra power strip (make sure you have an adapter for the wall). I got this one from Amazon and its perfect for a computer desk.

Bring more cash...

IMO you will find things to buy/need worth more than $200.00

Also, in case you ever leave KIA, In Afgan and Iraq, always had my passport and $600.00 E&E money just in case.. I kept it in my passport, on me and it was not touched for normal expenses.. Only in emergency break glass money...

I am unsure when it changed but for at least 2 years now, KIA has been KAIA to everyone over there I deal with.

I agree with earlier poster about mistaking KIA for its most known meaning.

KIA also referring to Killed In Action.

KAIA is the most common acronym for the airport compound now...

Not sure who your cell carrier is, but T-Mobile offers unlimited texting and data in Afghanistan for free. It's awesome...

Bring a blank 1TB (+) USB hard drive

You'll be needing those movies, music, and books.

He is talking about Kabul (based on the cold weather gear/snowfall chatter). And Kabul Airport Compound/Base, whatever you want to refer to it as has been referenced as KAIA for 2 years or more.

Thread title changed from KIA to KAIA to avoid obvious confusion

Thanks for the change. One of the kids at my gym kept referring to it as "KIA". He's Army 11B and now detached as a recruiter and I kept saying, no KAIA. Sorry for the confusion. Didn't know if I was in the wrong referring to it as KAIA.

Power adapter

I always bring a power adapter when leaving conus, regardless of the destination. Way too many layovers, changes etc to not pack one. I have one similar to this one:
https://www.amazon.com/World-Travel-Power-Adapter-Charger/dp/B00QQW2O14/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1486495367&sr=8-8&keywords=power+adapter+travel

I hope this helps you.

+1 on the extra pocket cash and E&E money. If experience has taught us anything, it is that you want to be able to get out of the country on your own if need be. Also, had a couple circumstances that required "greasing the wheel" at a couple ANA/ANP checkpoints. Not ethical, but it is better than sitting in Pul-e-Charkhi - generally, a couple Redbulls can alleviate the need to handout cash. Built a good relationship with NDS that changed that. Not sure what job you will be doing, but if you are frequently traveling throughout Kabul, I highly recommend networking and building relationships - this will help you immensely and even get you access to some things your PX might not carry. KAIA has perhaps the best selection, but NKC also has a PX. Not sure if the Afghan store "Finest" is still carrying some decent stuff. Another +1 on Amazon Prime, and if you are a gym rat you should definitely get your supplements from Bodybuilding.com - it arrives very fast.

I will throw in my two cents not so much for your barracks needs but here is my list of all items in my work bag purchased from amazon. During a year and a half contracting I have tweaked these items over time.

1. Orca Molle red first aid pouch with band-aids, gauze, Tylenol, Amoxycillin, Quikclot bandage, samsplint, chest seal, medical tape, medical gloves, snakebite kit, neosporin, alcohol prep wipes, 3m wrap
2. Bug spray
3. Mechanix gloves
4. Hacky sack (don't hate)
5. Gasket sealed eyewear for dust
6. Metal silverware
7. Gatorade packets, instant coffee, Mio
8. Retractable Phone charging cables
9. Rowkin Bluetooth earbuds
10. Anker brand Battery bank I recommend 20,000MAH
11. ISO bag lunch prepper from amazon with plastic meal prep containers BEST INVESTMENT keep your meals cold 12+ hours and holds 3 meals for a full day
12. BABY WIPES, rolled up microfiber towel, extra flashlight with batteries kept separate so they don't die, notepad and pens, recon wrap balaclava
13. iPad or tablet of your choice
14. Invest in a good G shock watch super tough and will last forever
15. Leatherman MUT or gerber
16. Maxpedition falcon II backpack, with mountain smith rain cover. I have a few different Molle pouches attached to the side for misc small items. 25 liter is in my opinion the perfect size for a work bag and everything I listed fits in it (minus the ISO lunch box). I have tested larger bags as well as smaller bags for my needs and IMO no one touches Maxpedition's quality of bags and pouches
