SJW vermin attack H.P. Lovecraft

Saw this in Salon this morning. SJW sci-fi writers acheived a victory when they successfully lobbied to change an award given in Lovecraft's name. These people continue their assaults on all vestiges of our culture, under the pretense that anybody who was racist 100 years ago has to be purged. Thankfully, they identify the culprits social media accounts...

Quote:
The legendary “cosmic horror” author has been dead for 78 years, and yet he continues to get more controversial by the day.

The most recent flare-up began on November 8, in Saratoga Springs, New York, when organizers of the World Fantasy Convention announced that, after forty years, Lovecraft’s face will no longer appear on the World Fantasy Award trophy. 2015 is the last time writers will win a “Howard,” as the award is known.

Now if you’re just arriving to this conversation, there are two main things you need to know. First, Lovecraft – who wrote “The Call of Cthulhu,” “The Colour Out of Space” and other influential tales of madness and “sentient blob[s] of self-shaping gelatinous flesh” – is one of weird fiction’s most celebrated authors. He is enshrined in the Library of America. Stephen King calls him “the twentieth century’s greatest practitioner of the classic horror tale.” The author of the novel “Psycho,” Robert Bloch, once wrote, “Poe and Lovecraft are our two American geniuses of fantasy, comparable each to the other, but incomparably superior to all the rest who follow.”

Second, as Lovecraft’s letters – and, to a lesser extent, his stories – reveal, the guy harbored a fierce loathing for almost all non-WASPs. Blacks were “greasy chimpanzees,” in Lovecraft’s words. French-Canadians were a “clamorous plague.” New York’s Chinatown was “a bastard mess of stewing mongrel flesh.” And so on.

The tension between these two truths has gnawed at the World Fantasy Awards for years. In 2011, WFA-award-winning writer Nnedi Okorafor wrote a blog post ruminating on Lovecraft’s infamous poem “On the Creation of N***ers” and what it means to receive an honor bearing the author’s likeness. Last year, the Brooklyn-based writer Daniel Jose Older launched a petition demanding the WFA statuette be changed. When news of WFC’s decision broke, Older tweeted “WE DID IT. YOU DID IT. IT’S DONE. YESSSSSSSS.”

Not everyone was as thrilled. On his blog, Lovecraft biographer S.T. Joshi described the removal as a “ridiculous” move “meant to placate the shrill whining of a handful of social justice warriors.” He included a letter he’d written to the WFC board co-chair announcing he would return his WFA trophies and do “everything in my power to urge a boycott of the World Fantasy Convention among my many friends and colleagues.”

A much creepier response came from the “white nationalist” site counter-currents.com, which reminded readers of its recently-launched “H. P. Lovecraft Prize for Literature, to be awarded to literary artists of the highest caliber who transgress the boundaries of political correctness…[a]s the Left continues to hollow out and destroy institutions, corrupt minds and culture, and denigrate white greatness.” In the words of fantasy/sci-fi/horror writer Scott Edelman: “Whoa.”

Now, there’s no quick answer to the question of how, exactly, we ought to approach a man talented enough to be the “King of Weird” and bigoted enough to casually describe his genocidal urges. (Lovecraft, on Jews: “I’ve easily felt able to slaughter a score or two when jammed in a N.Y. subway train.”) The conversation will – and should – continue long after this article.

But I do have a practical answer for the question of what to do with rejected or discarded “Howard” trophies: Send them to Providence, Rhode Island. Providence – founded in 1636; 2010 population: 178,038 – was Lovecraft’s hometown, and it’s where I’m currently teaching a semester-long class on the author at the Rhode Island School of Design. And no object better embodies the complexity of his legacy than these now-outdated trophies. They are the perfect teaching tool.

After all, Providence plays a major role in the Lovecraft story. It’s where he spent all but a couple years of his life. It’s a playground for the slithering, malevolent creatures he imagined. (See “The Shunned House” and “The Haunter of the Dark.”) And it’s a place that he loved with such fervency that he once declared in a letter “I Am Providence” – a quote now etched on his tombstone, in the city’s Swan Point Cemetery.

Lovecraft’s racial views are not irrelevant to his civic pride. In one letter, he wrote “New England is by far the best place for a white man to live.” In another, he added, “America has lost New York to the mongrels, but the sun shines just as brightly over Providence.”

For decades after his death, Lovecraft’s hometown love was mostly unrequited. But recent years have brought a long-delayed love-fest. Drive through Providence today and you’ll see “H.P. Lovecraft Memorial Square,” two plaques in his honor, and a Lovecraft bust in the city’s famed Athenaeum library. The city has Lovecraft-themed read-a-thons, walking tours, research fellowships, apps, writing contests, and bars that serve Lovecraft-inspired drinks like the “Bittersweet Tears of Cthulhu” and “Lovecraft’s Lament.”

On Halloween, at the recently opened “Lovecraft Arts & Sciences Council” store, I read an essay arguing that Lovecraft is now our city’s most famous citizen, past or present. And, in a sense, this is fitting – not despite the thorniness of his legacy, but because of it.

The 379-year-old saga of Providence swerves frequently from vice to virtue, achievement to embarrassment. Yes, we basically invented religious freedom, but we also headquartered the New England mafia. Yes, we once made everything from silverware to steam engines, but more recently, we’re known for the spectacular implosion of Curt Schilling’s publicly subsidized video game company.

Often the city’s contradictions are found in the same place. In the late 18th century, the Brown family – which included the abolitionist, Moses, and his slave-trading brother, John – was torn in two by the traffic of human beings, as the author Charles Rappleye illustrates in his award-winning book, “Sons of Providence: The Brown Brothers, the Slave Trade, and the American Revolution.”

(A 2006 report confirms that Brown University’s signature building was constructed, in part, by slave labor.)

Centuries later, when Providence woke from its post-industrial coma with a much touted 1990s/2000s “renaissance,” the man who led the resurrection – the charismatic, yet violent and vengeful, mayor Vincent “Buddy” Cianci – was convicted of running the city as a criminal enterprise. “’I’m struck between the parallels between this case and the classic story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” a federal judge told Cianci in 2002, before sentencing him to prison.

And then there’s Lovecraft: our homegrown “Literary Copernicus” and outspoken white supremacist. The same guy who gave us the Internet’s favorite tentacled monster, Cthulhu, once wrote to a friend, “The only thing that makes life endurable where blacks abound is the Jim Crow principle, & I wish they’d apply it in N.Y. both to niggers & to the more Asiatic type of puffy, rat-faced Jew.”

(Both Cthulhu and that quote appear in a new Keith Knight political cartoon captioned “H.P. Hatecraft.”)

This unresolved – perhaps unresolvable – tension is exactly what an exhibit of discarded “Howard” trophies would emphasize. I haven’t figured out where, exactly, it would be. Maybe Brown University’s Lovecraft Collection? But I will suggest some readings to accompany the show.

It would be wise to include some of S.T. Joshi’s arguments against Lovecraft-pushback, like the June 2014 blog post in which he argues, “In the totality of Lovecraft’s surviving letters, I would be surprised if racial issues are addressed in more than 5 percent of the text—perhaps no more than 1 percent…[and] There are perhaps only five stories in Lovecraft’s entire corpus of 65 original tales (‘The Street’ ‘Arthur Jermyn,’ ‘The Horror at Red Hook,’ ‘He,’ and ‘The Shadow over Innsmouth’) that have racism as their central core.”

But there should also be testimonials from WFA-winning writers like Sofia Samatar, who, after winning a “Best Novel” WFA last year, wrote, “Everyone should be able to announce their awards with unadulterated joy! And unless the statue is changed, there will be a lot more posts like this.”

And of course we’d need some primary-source material from the man, himself. Lovecraft’s descriptions of Providence in the novella “The Case of Charles Dexter Ward” are some one of the most lyrical passages every written about the city. And yet he penned some of the most alarming passages, too.

Once, during an ill-fated stint living in New York City, Lovecraft described the horror of a trip to the Bronx where he encountered crowds where “nine of every ten [were] flabby, pungent, grinning, chattering n***ers!”

“Wilted by the sight,” he wrote, “we did no more than take a side path to the shore and back and reenter the subway for the long homeward ride – waiting to find a train not too reminiscent of the packed hold of one of John Brown’s Providence merchantmen on the middle passage from the Guinea coast to Antigua or the Barbadoes.”

Riffs like this make you wonder: what did Lovecraft mean when he wrote, “I Am Providence,” anyway?

It's not their inferiority complex at work.

They have found a winning strategy in the wake of the Charleston Shootings, with the momentum the gained by having the Confederate flag banned from many places, linking "structural racism" built into our society with actual violence in the here and now.

The strategy is to comb the annals of history for evidence of racism involving any and all historical figures that are still prominent, and then use this to have them removed. This moves us closer to their goal of utterly destroying the fabric of our society.

That may be the strategy, but the motivation seems to be to make headlines and "go viral" in order to profit, if not financially, at least socially.

There is a limit and a danger that I am not convinced they fully appreciate yet. Continued assaults on the past run the risk of opening up questions about progressivism that they may not be ready to engage. If Woodrow Wilson must be removed, because of his racialist policies, then which other policies of his must be disavowed? Is it possible that his progressivism--or progressivism itself-- was itself flawed, if he was so bad? My college students became very uncomfortable when I pushed them to appreciate that the rational boundaries of 1910s progressivism -- backed by many including Southern Democrats--included prohibition of alcohol and state-directed forced sterilization. Do progressives really want to go there? They'll kill off their heroes.

I agree with M06 and Doc, it has directly to do with their fragile sense of dignity and their victories in downgrading established societal standards.

We grew up with sports heroes from our local teams, because one of our few sources of worldly information took us to see them. Dad's Uncles, Grand Pas etc. We were then able to play little league in an effort to be like Roberto Clemente or Willie Mays. This is how we developed pride and some of us even become honorable men and women.

These kids in college now are growing up in a world where you can buy the same gear used by Tier 1 units to kill the worst of the bad. There are no secrets anymore. They have the best of the best (supposedly) in their face 24/7. They see their parents and relatives as 'Lame" because they are not super anything. Couple this with daycare, single parent homes, no time for little league, football or soccer or even the glee club (Hot Mess stomping grounds). With the insurmountable standards set for them to be proud in comparison to this or that pro athlete. Enter the "participation trophy" designed to inject false pride because too many adults are "uncomfortable" correcting or mentoring or raising a kid to be able to achieve a standard that they can truly be proud of. To achieve a standard established by others that are respected in that area, not a standard set by the dignity snatchers or even themselves.

When you resign yourself to such a low level that your dignity is constantly in the balance, you look for coping mechanisms. Things like degrading the accomplishments of those seen as better than you. White privilege, stomping on a flag and so on. This makes the accomplishments of veterans, successful businessmen seem less important and therefore eases the pressure on their dignity because you suck for basically being better than me. Its why black progressives call successful black conservatives Uncle Tom. because they dare achieve the standard that has been identified as too difficult or unattainable.

Next comes the diversion. Don't look at my socially unacceptable behavior, bad grades, BA in women's studies or how fat I am or whether or not God thinks I should suck a dick. Let me divert your attention to historic figures that DID display socially acceptable behavior for their time and blame them for my maladies. Let me find fault in the very behavior that you A, expect me to display but am afraid to or simply can't and B, is required to pay for my personal shortcomings. I blame your dislike of me on a physical difference in my DNA, something I cannot change. This easily prevents me from answering for my socially unacceptable behavior, further damaging my already endangered sense of dignity.

And since I have you on the run and have gained some of your attention (and more false pride) through my fight for social justice or what you grown up people consider condescension, I am going to ask for the mother fucking world to kiss my ass and ensure that I never have to succeed, be offended or uncomfortable and leave me to live my life of being gay, fat, brown, pink, stupid, a girl, foreign (Basically, Hot Mess' best attributes) all of which I blame for my self-imposed sense of mediocrity that was exacerbated by helicopter parents that were afraid to let me wipe my own ass for fear of legitimate butt hurt.

So the question I believe is WHAT they are doing and WHY. In short, they see the bar as too high and insurmountable because their examples are the uber athletes, warriors and models, so to maintain a sense of dignity, they have to degrade the standard to match their level of performance as opposed to the way grown up people do it. If not by finding fault behavior in this generation then with those gone by. That way, no one is able to confront my self loathing behavior, furthering my false sense of pride for having accomplished something seen as important by others in the "also ran" column all without experiencing any discomfort (Read, having my substandard performance judged by those I will soon expect to hire me).

These people will never be truly proud of anything. They will certainly never be honorable.

You guys are onto something.

M06 hit upon their strategy: to erase history that is disagreeable.

Their motivation, i.e. Why?

I posit the following: Because they can not change their internal inadequacies, they change external perceptions of injustice.

Folks with strong morals and ethics can evolve and improve upon their own failings. This is where "we learn from our mistakes" and evolve to be better. This is where they "step up to the plate". They channel that energy to better things and improve themselves as well as the environment.

Weaklings fail to achieve this. They feel inadequate. They can't build their character. Thus, they externalize this inadequacy by tearing others down.

M06 states that they end up "utterly destroying the fabric of our society."

You may be right about that end state.

The question then is: What is the fabric of our society?

I agree. They're just physical and moral cowards who are too scared, or too lazy, to meet or exceed the bar set by previous generations. Yet they'll expend much more effort into dragging everyone else down to their level of inadequacy.

By that, I mean in ever field of endeavor. Nothing is safe these days.

As with all good happy mobs, these SJW groups have a core group of real true believers, surrounded by some who don't know any better. I still remember my freshman year roommate coming back to our dorm room after going to some 'oppression' lecture fall quarter. He was completely different after it. Completely. He began to take down all the hot model pictures he's spent the last four weeks putting up in our dorm room. Sexism! Exploitation! he called out. He was a true believer in training, and would not be convinced otherwise unless presented with real contradictions! ["This university exploits the students and forces them to do things!" he cried. "No one makes you attend here--you could always go somewhere else. It's just a contract." replies the rational hard-left neighbor down the hall.]

But I think there are a large number who just don't know any better (the foolish), who think that amid the mystery of the amazing university this is what it is all about and that they should be a part of it so long as there are no consequences. Witness the giggle looks on the girls in the photograph from Mizzou when the photographer is stopped.

In a larger circle surrounding them are the great unwashed, who exhibit the solid qualities of America: be polite, be tolerant, be focused on important things, and hope to God that the noisy wacko just moves along and stops somewhere else. People are afraid to challenge their fellow students and force a debate. In a way, I think the conservative opposition to this has become (a) too quiescent, and (b) too greatly outnumbered (by their own perception if not in reality) to feel safe voicing their opposition to this behavior in direct, public action.

The key, I think, lies in showing the great unwashed and the foolish that the world is more complicated and the past more magical than they are being told by the SJWs. It lies also in triggering that desire inside of them to work harder and aim for those high levels that M06 and TFG suggest the SJW have decided is unobtainable and must be brought down. Some of the faculty see this. But we are outnumbered and outflanked.

[Of course, the real danger is that Lovecraft was on to something and he could only warn us through fiction. These SJWs work for Cthulhu. And Cthulhu is coming. Yog-sothoth!]

Well, in all fairness, they resent the hell out of it as well. It was us who gave them that name.

If they can establish precedent for invalidating historical persons that un-approved characteristics, they can invalidate the founding fathers. When they do that, the can attack the constitution and bully their way to a re-write.

I hate to go all Orwell, but are we not about there? Re writing history and making people un persons? I graduated from high school in 1984, so we all had to read it, and we all laughed about how far fetched it was and how wildly paranoid it was. I re read it about 5 years ago and I was like "holy shit".

Just got done reading about the University of Minnesota's student body tying a 9/11 moment of silence to some sort of bigotry against muslims - and the faculty supporting it - until the President of the University said "fuck no, we are absolutely having a moment of silence", well, I think you're spot on.

PC + SJW + Politicians who support that agenda to get elected = Advent of the 2nd American Civil War.

Saw this last week. More than half the student council body voted against having a moment of silence for 9/11?! WTF over?! Cause it might offend Muslims or create hostility for them? Oh, please.
This PC crap is getting out of hand, that is for sure.

In Myanmar (Burma) when I was there, the people refer to Orwell as "The Prophet".

I tend to agree with this, but having been, to a degree, through the it has to get worse before it gets better I can honestly say its a long and painful process and I do not wish it upon anyone. Especially my children.
