An additional way is to set up a "block list" of URLs and IP Addresses. The web link below from free-fire zone specifically identifies all the RightHaven clients. Shouldn't be a problem to include this corporation. The plug-in works on browsers and there's probably an AWK script to run through web links on the server.

We can't do that. I figure like many things it will take some time to get everyone in the loop.

We're comfortable knowing that the name of this company and it's publications will come up in web searches people conduct on them.

How hard of a task is this to accomplish? Can you simply block based on homepage, and that includes everything after 'newspage.com/xxxxxx'

As far as links to those publications/websites, you can add the internet address into the forum software's, for lack of a better term "bad word" list which should replace the so called "bad word" with a phrase of your choosing. That would at least stop members from posting a link to those sites.

Just a thought.

I'm a Mac Owner; but:

Path: c:\WINDOWS\system32drivers\etc\.
-->Make a backup copy of the hosts text file.

-->Open the Hosts file with Notepad and paste the entries in the
"windows-blocklist.txt" file that you download from the above web site.

-->Make sure you put a tab in between the first column (IP Address 127.0.0.1) and the second column (URL). Use ctrl+h for the replace function in Word or Notepad.

-->Reboot your machine.

What this does is re-direct your browser to an internal loopback address (127.0.0.1) inside your PC whenever you type in one of the listed URLs in the hosts file. Shouldn't affect your browsing speed at all.

GackMan? BOFH? Anything to chime in on?

We already do that with a number of sites. If I didn't post that we were doing it with Gannet, we'd end up answering questions about it every time someone tired to link there.

Thanks

Then the modified host file would need to be added to every socnet user's computer...

SOCNET could add the list of publications to the profanity filter - so if a person types somenewspaper.com it will show up as *************.com and the link will not work.

However, if a user pastes the content of the article with the link, the article would be there.

True, but it stops the linkage upstream from SOCNET: The Member's computer.

Sounds like more trouble than it's worth.

Gannett can fucking blow me. You can quote me on that free of charge.

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Looms but the Horror of the shade
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

I am the master of my fate
I am the captain of my soul.

I blame Sean Naylor.

Are you being serious? Just looking for an explanation why you think that. Is it cutting into his revenue stream?

Talk about failing to understand the modern internet media traffic business. I hope they "get it" one day.

I can't remember the last time I read one of Gannett's publications, much less cited them.

Does anybody even read USA Today? The only time I look at it is if I'm staying at a hotel and they toss me a complimentary copy.

You guys can kill any and all links from hitting the server, which will in turn destroy them on a post. The problem is that it will generate a generic error for the user trying to make the post. You could then make a custom error page but I am not sure what length the site wants to go. Bottom line is that it is absolutely possible.

Ive noticed several newspapers and magazines now, when you copy and paste part of an article it automatically adds "Read more here:" followed by the link. Seems like a much smarter way of handling the issue, free advertising directing more traffic to their site. I think Time is one doing this.

CV,

I can read what you wrote however, I have no clue what it is, that you're saying.

Say safe.

The site can be blocked and people will not see any of their content here on SOCNET.
