You were able to video tape your training while you were going through the course?

haha! I wish. No, I kept a fairly detailed journal the entire time I was there. So I decided to share it with everyone in this video series.

Good to hear, I was afraid Ranger School had gone all "Millennial" on us.

Well in 2014 they were still pretty old school. I realized that after an RI in Mountains told me he was going to murder my family. 6 months later he became my Company Commander in 25ID.

Just for good measure

I'll add a couple of things that worked back in the '70's in Ranger School-

Treat at least 3 pairs of well broken in boots with neat's foot oil- it will prevent your boots from rotting and keep them pretty soft.

Furthermore, I got my boots wet then pounded the crap out of the toes then pulled all that 'stiffening paper out of the toes; it made my boots fell like running shoes.

Remember the saying "1 is none, 2 is 1" when thinking planning for things that are indispensable- flashlights(headlamps), batteries, pens, pencils, notebooks. Have a ziplock with this stuff somewhere in your kit- when you need them they will either fail or need replacing..then put the ziplock in a ziplock

Take GOOD socks with you- your feet are your LIFE in Ranger School.

Have a sense of humor- if you can find something funny in a bad situation, make light of yourself, or just give a Ranger Buddy something to think about other how much life is sucking at the moment- it is a priceless asset that will help everyone around you.

Give credit and take blame- when you get your leadership counseling a the end of a graded patrol, mention someone that did a good job(besides you)- it shows you ARE a leader and may get them a + spot report that may mean the difference between graduation and recycle. Don't, however, just lay down and take a drubbing if someone buddy fucked you- stand up for yourself without using names...

Thank you everyone.

I've been re-reading this thread the past few days to keep all the advice fresh on my mind.

Good for you. Being a Team Player will get you a long way sometimes and prevent you from getting peered. Always know where you are within 200 meters. Use your strengths to help your Platoon and visa versa.

Good Luck and keep keep us updated..

Young Captain, I watched your entire series, and must say that you've done a very good job with it. Your position as a regular Army non-combat arms 'outsider' gave you a good perspective to objectively evaluate and report on what happened during the course.

I'd recommend anybody going to Ranger School watch his series, take notes, and watch it again.

My anecdotal advise for RS prep is no so old that you'd likely get booted outta the Army should you follow it

There was a douchebag in my platoon that got tabbed about two months before I went, whenever things were just shitty.....cold, wet, miserable, tired....I just kept thinking to myself if that cocksucker could get a tab, I for damn sure could suck it up.

Funny thing about the tab, when it was pinned, I just didn't care. I was so proud when I got my jump wings, and even more proud when I put on my black beret. But the tab, I had nothing, it just meant I didn't have to elevate my feet because I didn't have it. Really I just wanted just wanted to go eat and get the fuck back to battalion.

Matter of fact, I went to a Class 7. Was supposed to be a summer class. It was sleeting at Ft. Benning when we roadmarched 17 miles from Camp Darby to the water confidence training at Victory Pond.

Move up to the Mountains....late snow storm put down 4" of snow.

The RI's were very considerate though. They let us pack a field jacket liner.
