My Pedersoli rolling block 45-70 at a steel match at Ridgway Rifle Club in Pennsylvania a few weeks back.

Bump.

Well I finally got off the fence and fell onto the 45/70 side. Have been wanting one for years. I've shot the round before but not in this short of a barrel (18 1/2) Its the model 1895 GBL.

Should be an outstanding thicket gun and inside 100 yds, my target zone.

Rifle comes in a few days and pick it up from my FFL guy. Cant wait to shoot it. I dont think I'll scope it for my purposes. I may need some ammo advice.

Today was a good day.

Primary use?

For whitetail, where you don't care about meat, the 325gr Hornady flex tips shoot very accurately.

However, they have explosive results on impact.

After that, any 405 gr copper jacketed round will do just fine on anything you might find in WV.

On the whole, 45-70 is overgunning for any animal in WV, but certainly effective. One nice thing about the 45-70 is that, with heavy bullets, it is very good at preserving meat. (slow, big bullet bruises meat less than a small fast bullet)

Personally, I shoot a hand loaded, personally cast 540 gr lead bullet, but that would be a bit of overkill in your neck of the woods. (nor would it fit in your chamber)

A good receiver aperture sight works wonderfully on a Guide Gun. Concur on factory 405gn crushing anything you're likely to find in your local neighborhood. I find cast 405'ish bullets over 40gn of IMR-3031 is a nice pleasant load that will punch 45 caliber holes through anything short of an engine block or rear end housing. It should be about 1500fps from an 18" barrel. S/F....Ken M

I have always wished for a 45/70 myself. I don't remember them kicking the shit out of me , but I was young then. I love all the saddle guns....

I ordered this custom Marlin 1895 45-70 from Grizzly Custom Guns. Slicked up action and loading gate, stock through bolt retention system, barrel cut to 16.25", etc.
It arrives in a few days. I'm excited!

I have an 1895 GBL as well and it will go to the grave with me. Loved it with iron sights but got curious and threw a scout rail and vortex RDS on there and wow... what a fast gun!

Love that you can load it up or down for what is needed. Have fun with it!

Gunk- Jealous of that custom. Sweet guns for sure.

Well. I was thinking no scope. But will get the irons sighted in and have ordered a scout rail & Burris 2X7 Scout scope.

Pics when done. I go to Appaloosa Leather for custom slings. Nice stuff.

Love your .375 My list of firearms on my wish/next to buy list is long enough for now. CZ-.22 Hornet, CZ-.22 mag rifle, another Henry Lever and a .41 mag hogleg. But I'm impulsive...those priorities may change.

The Marlin is nuff gun for now.

I really, really like Gunks Custom.

As much as I would love a .45/70, if I get another lever action I will probably go with the new .350 round. Probably all my shoulders will handle anymore.

The new 350 Legend is rimless and would be a poor choice for a lever gun IMO. Since it's basically just a rimless 357 Max, that would be the place to look IMO. S/F....Ken M

A very useful lever gun is a model 1892 (or clone) in 45 Colt. What's great about the 45 Colt in the 92 is that, since the 92 action is very strong, it can handle from mild to wild.

You can load it with Cowboy ammo, and it kicks little more than a 22. Or, you can load it with heavy Buffalo Bore (or similar) loads, and it's effectiveness is within spitting distance of a 45/70.
