USAJOBS

Anyone ever apply from here and actually get an interview and gasp...a job offer?

I spent about two hours applying for one yesterday at a GS-12 position that was open to vets. It's a manager for an office full of OSHA inspectors for the DLA here in Columbus. I have the required training and experiance, but not being a current federal employee I figure no way. But they can't say yes if I don't apply.

Anyone have any information/experiances?

I got a call back/job offer earlier this summer for a weekend job working one of the ranges here (which i had to decline), it was my first call back since I made the profile about 3 years ago. None of my "primary" applications have been nibbled on by employers, but once I get close to finishing school Ill have to update my profile and get it out there more.

I have applied in the past for jobs I was more than qualified for, and not heard a word.

I would use the site to apply, then dig and find out the HR office for the agency where the job actually is and send them a follow-up a week later.

I have had five interviews and one job offer with the DOA. My wife also had one interview with the VA.
Most of the time my resume is referred to the selecting official but I never hear from them.

At the bottom of the announcement it should have contact info.

Make sure your resume has the key words that are in the announcement and that the most relevant experience is at the top. Don’t start with the most resent, the person looking at your resume is only going to at the first few sentences and if he doesn’t see that you are qualified the he will stop reading and pass you by. If you know someone that is good with resumes then have them do it for you. My wife did all of mine. Also make them as long as necessary. I was listening to a webinar on how to get a fed job and the lady who worked for the Navy said that unlike the privet sector, which preferred short resumes of around two pages, you should make it as long as you need. I think she said eight pages was the norm.

I have hired people off USAJOBS.

It basically just relates to whether the supervisor is paying attention or not.

If you get no response, then the organization must not really need the position filled.

I applied to 5 jobs, had 3 interviews, and accepted one. It is all about the keywords and how you use them to frame your experiences, among other things. I also think it takes a little bit of luck coupled with the right timing and an HR Specialist who actually looks at your resume.

I have a book that was recommended to me by someone already in the Federal system. It explained the Federal resume & KSA requirements and I found it very helpful, for the most part. If you are interested in applying for other Federal jobs, I would be happy to pass it your way for some "light" reading. I am in Columbus and could get it to you...

Five years ago, I looked for 18 months with no results; clearance had long expired. I received a call about the job I'm in now and they were willing to fund the "bring-up". I have applied for a few after being in the system with no results. Jobs that I was uniquely qualified for, I wasn't even referred as i was not qualified. Can you spell "FIX!"? Also, not once did I get a nibble from the resume search depository, only ones I submitted for directly.

The 3 GOV jobs that I have had, I was hired through USAJOBs. I am currently a contractor and have applied for a few things out here because our contract maybe through soon....

Over the past 3-4 months, I have gotten (4) calls after applying for 20 jobs or so.... I haven't taken a one do to various reasons (usually shitty location that I applied for on a whim) and will be declining one tonight. Not going back to the ME.... Just can't do it.....

My fat ass loves beer and the ocean to much right now.....

My wife works for DOL and got her job through USA Jobs, took a few weeks. You should get notified as the process moves along, she heard back from all she applied to even the those she wasnt qualified for. The one you applied for is open to all otherwise it should have been listed as a status position and had a current GS grade requirement listed.

When preparing your resume for a specific job, it's often useful to read the Position Classification Standards for that specific job series to ensure that you are hitting the right targets. The can be found on the OPM Website at http://www.opm.gov/fedclass/html/gsseries.asp

ALL good advice above, especially from 5pins and hugh_ct.

I had never even considered federal employment before I applied on a whim and got hired. I'm with ICE and climbing the ladder rapidly, loving every minute of it.

Following up is a great idea. I don't know how bad other agencies are, but we've had major problems where different people in Dallas started handling our applications without communicating that they were doing that, resulting in the physical and theoretical disappearance of many highly qualified candidates' packets. Some had to literally be recovered from the desks of the people whom they were originally assigned to. I know several folks (now ICE employees) who had that happen, and if they had not called and kept kindly requesting a check on their status, they would have never been hired. We also had some screwups on the local level where "the certificate" made it to our office but somewhere between there and Dallas, the selections were somehow de-selected, and to the outside it looked like we did not choose anyone. Where in fact we had made our picks, to include a very highly-qualified friend of mine, who never would have known if it were not for him and I making repeated phone calls up and down the chain of command.

I put in for 3 or 4 random jobs over the years with no luck (over-qualified for one DoN position and got the "you're not qualified" response, go figure) until last year when I put in for my current position with State. Applied and was asked to interview within two weeks, offered the job within two weeks after that. It is my understanding (as far as DS goes) that unless you're a vet, you probably aren't getting the direct hire jobs. Contractors are a different story.

My current VA position was through USAJobs-- I wrote my resume and listed every damn thing I could. To be honest, most of my bullet points for my job experience looked like EPR/OPR bullets. I was actually complimented on it during my interview, which I thought was funny.

I was also called back for a DEA position and a few Army contractor positions. I would be surprised to not hear ANYTHING though. You usually get a "not referred to hiring agency" email.

The first goal is to make "the list." For that, key words are critical as the resumes are electronically scanned. Once you make the list, your resume is racked and stacked against all the others who applied for the same position. The resumes are scored and then given to the selecting officials for consideration. Those selecting officals are the ones who actually decide whether or not to interview.

My recommendation is to list everything you possibly can on your resume in a clear and concise way, to include courses you've taken in college.

I've gotten two Fed jobs through USAJobs and one through Army's CPOL website. I've also turned down a few after interviews.

If you know someone in the organization, they can help, but only after your resume has been referred to the selecting official.

I've applied for, been called to test, and accepted job offers all from USAJOBS.com, so I'd say "yes, it works". I agree with the above advice about keywords. Completing the KSA part and answering questions does take forever, but as you apply do different jobs/agencies, keep your answers so you can learn from them and/or use them again.

One experience

I have applied to multiple positions on USAjobs. The only one I received a call back and an offer on was very interesting. It was for a low level security position with the CDC. Initially they told me I wasn't qualified. I called and talked with the HR people and kept asking for the next higher manager until I got a thinking human that decided I was qualified. At the interview the head of security said I was over qualified and asked why I wanted the job. So I guess it pays to call and follow up.

I also have a friend that works for one of the agencies that deals with national parks and her advice was to answer 'I am an expert and ...' for every question even if I know my experiece is at a lower level.

SOCNET does it again...

Last yr (early 2009) I began working on a second Masters Degree. This one in Psychiatric Medicine with an in depth concentration on PTSD. As I got into it... I noticed that the regional VA was advertising a position for a Psychiatric Physician Assistant.

This was an ideal position for me because I really enjoy working with those who have served and in this position, I could also continue to dabble in addiction medicine and moonlight in emergency medicine & internal medicine.

So I applied for the position in Jun. of 2009, then Sep. of 2009, then Jun. of 2010.
I didn't hear not a damn thing from HR at the VA.

I read this thread on Nov. 1 and decided to try one last time. I wrote a 4th targeted coverletter and reformatted my resume/cv. In the coverletter and CV I addressed and bolded each and every desired qualification listed in the posting.

Coverletter Example:

I re-formatted my resume as requested but also bolded the keywords that were specifically used in the job anouncement. I sent it in the traditional way, by mail with a delivery reciept and then drove another full copy of the packet to the VA clinic (without a appointment) and requested to speak with the clinic manager.

I waited in the lobby about 15 min, "bent the ear" of the manager who expressed similar frustration getting the position filled, then assured me that she would "walk the application thru the process."

I reformatted everything Monday night... put it in the mail and met with the clinic manager Tuesday morning... I recieved a phone call on Thursday from the VA and now have a interview this coming Tuesday. We will see how it goes.
