RFI: Kansas City, MO

My dad and I have $1k in vouchers on Spirit Airlines(blech, but it's free) to spend, so we're planning on heading to Kansas City for five days(Spirit flies non-stop from MCO).

Any recommendations you all can provide?

Already planning on the World War I Museum and the TWA museum. Possibly the Truman library/museum in Independence. Possibly might drive to St. Louis for a day to see the Arch, as well.

Thanks in advance.

I'm from KC.

BBQ!! If you are into it really good BBQ, there are a ton of places. Even the crappy places are great. My fav's are KC Joe's (3002 W 47th St, Kansas City, KS 66103/use to be OK Joe's. And yes, its a functional gas station as well. Get their early. Lines start forming before it opens) Arthur Bryant's (1727 Brooklyn Ave. Other ones aren't the same in my book), Slapps BBQ (553 Central Ave, Kansas City, KS), Gates BBQ (3205 Main St, Kansas City, MO) and Jack Stack BBQ (9520 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS).

Beer: Boulevard Beer and KC Bier are great, local breweries that give tours. I prefer KC Bier due to the owners going with a brewing processes straight from Germany. Some of the best German Bier I've had outside the country.

In no particular order.
Truman Library/Museum
WW1 Museum
The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art
Negro League Baseball Museum (Arthur Bryant's is right there)
American Jazz Museum (Next to the above)
Arabia Steamboat Museum
Catch a game at the "K" (Royal Stadium). They suck this year so you will be able to walk up and grab decent tickets for decent money.
KC Zoo (its getting better than it use to be)
The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures
Power & Light is nine square blocks of walkable, drinkable fun. It’s a loud, electric space that’s KC’s microcosm answer to the Vegas Strip.
Running between River Market and Union Station is the state of the art KC Streetcar. (It's FREE!)
Union Station/Science Center at Union Station (near the WW1 Museum).
Hallmark Visitors Center (a bit cheesy but free)

I live in Rural MO just outside of KCMO. I will double down on Mizzou'a recommendations. We also have a NASCAR Speedway, not sure if its the season or not. Most definitely eat at Jack Stack.

Forgot to add the various casino boats are there as well.

Harrah's, AmeriStar, Argosy, and Hollywood at the KS Speedway are all safe/decent places to go if you are into that.

Most not only have the gambling, but they have hotel rooms, decent places to eat, and events going on all the time. Last time i was back, I caught Ronnie Milsap and some other country artist from the 80s for next to nothing. They put on a good show if you are into that type of music.

Isle of Capri, 7th Street (in KCK) and the rest in the area are ghetto and tend to have more Troopers/LE assigned to them than the others (for a reason).

I grew up just outside of St. Louis. The car inside the arch is tight. Definitely not for claustrophobics. If you get to St. Louis you should definitely find a place that serves pork steak sandwiches.

I'm a frequent visitor to the KC area having many relatives there. I concur with MizzouMP's feedback. My dad used to get Jack Stack shipped to his home in Va. Beach, VA regularly. Power and Light District is worth a visit for chow and drinks. If I were to take family and was considering time outside of KC, I would favor the Ozarks over St. Louis. However, that is dependent on interests and availability of time.

I stick to my choices BUT, that said, even the crappy looking places or places in the rough parts of town serve great BBQ.

One of the new places is Q39 in Midtown. Good luck getting a seat there. Its tight 24/7. I've been there x2 and it was ok. Way over priced for the same stuff you can get at Gates.

The woodyard bbq in KC is legit. I am close enough that KC is a good day trip for us. Like was said above, Joe’s KC for the Zman sandwich on Texas toast with fries is a must have.

Echo a lot of the advice here.
Try and do a KC Royals game if they're playing. One of the prettier stadiums IMHO. And a cool museum/HOF room.
I prefer Jack Stack, but OK Joes is good shit too.
WWI museum is one of the coolest military museums I've ever been to. That's a must see.
Power & Light is fun, but so is old Westport(Power & light, before P & L was around basically) 30 yrs ago it was the shit. Still have some decent bars that are a little more low key.
Have fun
