I got this off the MARSOC Foundations page this morning. I'm still indifferent to badges, but being pinned by the legendary WWII Raiders must have been special. Gung Ho!

^^^ That's just awesome. What an honor for those Marines.

And the badge looks much better "live" than the image that was posted on line when it was announced.

Agreed. It's less gay than I originally perceived but it's still........When I was a boot I had the honor of meeting Jimmie Howard and some other Recon legends from the VN era and I was awed. To be pinned by members of Edson's and Carlson's Raiders would have been an incredible moment, big boots to fill for sure.

Wow - meeting Howard and the others must have been special.
I am currently reading the book "Stingray" and Howard's patrol is mentioned in it several times.

It was. He was the guest speaker at our 'Mess Night' in June 1990 (pic), he sat at our table as we were the next plt to deploy 2 weeks later. In later life he was the football coach at Pt Loma High School, he passed in 1994. If you're interested in reading about the battle I would recommend 'Hill 488', it covers the good, bad and ugly. The most decorated small unit in American military history.

Out-fucking-standing, Top. Great photo. I will put Hill 488 at the top of the reading list.

Hope I can buy you a few beers some day and hear some stories...

From the book "Stingray":
- 15 Silver Stars
- 2 Navy Crosses
- 1 MOH - SSgt Jim Howard

The patrol lost six men. RIP.

Cap, Ralph Johnson was awarded the MOH, our barracks were named after him He was awarded for an action not during the action on Howards Hill. Nonetheless, he is/was a Devil of the highest order!
