Me and our snake

Tommy Hammons smuggled this Indigo back from a deployment to Panama. We kept him in an aquarium in our room with a breeding pair of rats in a separate aquarium. We had to force feed the baby rats to the snake since he wouldn't eat in captivity. There are quite a few legendary tales about that snake--and I've got a few funny ones about the rats---damn, I wish I could remember their names. Lola was the girl, I think... That's me, BTW...

Bro, please. That's Linda Ronstadt, a Blondie calendar from Peaches and if I have to tell you who's on the right I can't help you. The arrow: Dean Wathier and I were doing quite a bit of practice with our bows at that time....

So, that means you were using each other as targets?

What's with you 2nd Batt boys and snakes?

I inherited a 2nd Batt kid in my Pathfinder platoon at Hood in the mid-80's. We lived wit the Cav so our boys lived in those luxury star-ship looking barracks. They all had college-type fridges in the room.

Did a room inspection one day, young Ranger standing by his bunk, I opened the fridge, looked in that little lame freezer and their was a HUGE bag of dead rattlesnakes.

Me (after I pissed myself): Ranger, what are those snakes for?
Him: I catch them Sergeant
Me: no shit sherlock
Him: then I skin them and try to sell the skins
Me: what do you do with the rest of the snake?
Him: eat them

Apparently he had been cooking rattle snake on a hotplate.....

Y'all boys is all messed up

Soooo, one Sunday afternoon we were entertaining several young ladies in our room...nothing untoward, mind you. Tommy got the snake out of the aquarium and was regaling the young lovelies with tales of serpent derring-do (dude was a rattlesnake roundup champ from Oklahoma, no lie.) Any rate, our room was a first floor NCO room and had a couple pipes running across it, under the ceiling. Tommy puts the snake on the pipe, it starts slithering along to squeals of delight from the fair maidens.... Snake gets to the end of the pipe and enters the cinder block wall through a small opening... Well, you can't pull a snake out of a hole. Trust me. Damn snake disappeared.

Next thing you know, we're deployed somewhere. We get back three weeks later and the damn snake is back in his aquarium. Turned out he spent a couple weeks in the ceiling while we were gone and, no shit, dropped off the pipe onto the face of John Nizza in the middle of the night--he was in the room next door and on rear detachment. He freaked out, threw the snake across the room, figured out what had happened (he knew the snake, the snake was cool, part of the crew) so he gathered the snake up and took him home to our room.

And I thought it was bad when the rats got out of their aquarium, ran along the window sill and jumped onto my face when I was sleeping.... you see, Tommy had a girlfriend off post and... well, it's a long story.
