LR,
I was sorry to see this. I had a flash back.

Ranger Mattison was one of the best.... He was an RI who graded my first patrol (he flunked me). Put one of the most efficient boots up my ass that could ever be, and his words guided me thru the rest of the phases. He cared.

Later, I was at RHQ and IIRC, when we met again, he was a First Sergeant then in 3/75. He remembered every detail of our first encounter and I thanked him for his efforts.
Damn, just damn.
Command Sergeant Major, I hope to see you at the ORP. RLTW! JAGO

Yep. He was my 1SG (as well as Football Batt's) at A/3/75. I spoke to him pretty often on Facebook. Hell, he just liked one of my posts about Roy Brown just 5 hours ago. I'm stunned that he is gone.

I am, however, very glad that I was able to let him know the impact that he had on so many of us young Rangers. He was a larger than life character who led by example at all times. He will be greatly missed.

RIP Joe.

Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

I am the captain of my soul.

Thank you for your service Ranger, from a grateful nation. Lest we forget..................

It's with a heavy heart that that we inform you of the sudden passing of Ranger legend CSM (R) Joe Mattison. He died just a few hours ago at his home from a heart attack. Please make sure this gets shared with all that served with him or knew him.

CSM Mattison was a 2013 Ranger Hall of Fame inductee. He was also inducted as a Distinguished Member of the Ranger Training Brigade on 13 Apr 2011, and served as a Director and organizer for the US Army Ranger Association.

CSM Mattison was a career Ranger, serving as an Original in the 1st Modern Day Ranger Battalion since WWII. He served in B Co 1/75 from Feb 74 - Sep 77, graduating from Ranger School and 'Tabbed' in class 2-76. He then went on to the serve in Ranger Training at the Mountain Ranger Camp from Sep 79 - Apr 84.

He was also a 3/75 Original, serving as a Platoon Sgt in A Co from Apr 84 - Apr 86 and again as a 1st Sgt from Sept 88 - Feb 91.

When Ranger Training was officially designated as the Ranger Training Brigade (RTB), CSM Mattison was yet again 'Leading the Way' as an Original of the RTB initiated in 1987, CSM Mattison served in the RTB from Apr 86 - Sept 88, and again from May 96 - Aug 98.

CSM Mattison also jumped into Panama with the 3rd Ranger Battalion during Operation Just Cause on 19 December 1989, 27 years ago yesterday.

CSM Mattison was a true Ranger legend in every sense, and greatly loved by all those that served with him. He will be sorely missed.

Joe will be cremated and there will be a service in a few weeks. Condolences can be sent to Adam Mattison, 146 Middleground Road, Newington, GA 30446

Joe's son Adam has requested that those who desire to make a donation in his father's name to either the Mountain Ranger Association:

http://www.usmountainranger.org/sop/donations.htm

or to the Lead the Way Fund:

https://www.leadthewayfund.org/donate/

Rest easy Joe, thank you for Leading the Way for a whole generation of Rangers.
