Raid for Nick Rowe.

My tours 65-66, and 68-69-70 were in the Delta. We rarely saw NVA, however we did see them after receiving hot intel that Nick Rowe was spotted in a cage in the U-Minh forest. We staged just about every AC in the Delta at SocTrang, and went in to get Nick.

The U-Minh was bad news, we had guys writing the proverbial letter home, should they not return.

SocTrang was the furthest Airfield south and the U-Minh was south of us. I flew low level over the U-Minh often, trolling, just about always got results.

This was to be a very large assault. I was chosen to lead a heavy team of gunships down the right side of the LZ. Another light team from our platoon was to light up the left side. Expend all my ammo if I saw anything suspicious, return to re-arm and back to the fight were my orders. The LZ was too perfect, shoebox shaped, with crew served MG's at every corner and scattered around anywhere they could be camo'd.

I apologize, just spent maybe an hour writing this up, and half of it is missing. I'll be back this afternoon and try to finish it up.

We were initially briefed that a high ranking NVA General was sighted in that position, we were going in to snatch him. Then the briefing was changed to Nick being spotted in a bamboo cage, at the same location. The LZ was near enough, and large enough to land a bunch of Nung mercenaries, tough little MF'ers. Who would launch from that LZ to rescue Nick.

I started off the show. My heavy fire team was to suppress down the right side of the LZ, a second fire team from our platoon was suppressing down the left side. Once we made the suppression run down either side, another gun platoon commanded by Ray Nutter was to lead the first flight of slicks onto the LZ suppressing with all they had.

The return fire was devastating, even with me firing rockets, my co-pilot utilizing the flex kit which controlled the four mounted M-60's that were slaved to his parralax sight. My CE, and door gunner were each freehanding their m60-s out their respective doors. We were still shot to pieces, somewhere on the order of 40 hits, on one run. We were able to limp that beautiful B-model to maybe a half mile from the LZ, no radios, no hydraulics, no airspeed. I pranged it in, and we ended up against a rice paddy dike, that's where we made our stand. Quick disconnected the M-60's, lined up all personal wpns, for instance, I always carried an M-14 behind my seat. We were not on the ground long, my fire team was overhead in a protective orbit, a slick landed soon and lifted us out.

Ray Nutter was shot down in the middle of the LZ, his co-pilot whose name was Hargrove never left the AC. Ray got his CE, and gunner out, and immediately started to E & E, at one point their clothing was making too much noise going through brambles, so Ray had them shed all their clothing. The next morning they were spotted by an AC looking for them, and picked up. I believe Ray was awarded the DSC for his actions.

A bunch of Nungs were dropped into the LZ, not one of made it made it off the LZ alive.

Years later, Ray was an aide to Nixon, Nixon had just been briefed on the incredible heroism of Rocky Versace. Nixon said to Ray that Ray needed to make sure that Versace received the MOH, Ray responded that after being in that office, and knowing Versace's story he would make sure it happened. It did...

I type Versace's name and I tear up. If you don't know his story look it up. Hope I didn't go on too long.

Those are the tidbits of history that we would never know about if Warriors like yourself didn't tell those stories.

Thank you for sharing sir. I just read the award citations for Captain Versace and Colonel Nutter, both were above and beyond...... I pray that Captain Versace's remains are found and returned for proper burial and closure for his brothers and sister.

I flew with Nutter, didn't know Versace, just knew of his heroism..."above and beyond" says it well.

Extraordinary men.

We -60 CE's always looked up to the ole' Huey guys from Vietnam who were really in it. You guys really did it... if something like that happened today, they'd make a movie out of it (like they did).

My hat's off to you.
