Buckaroo Banzai, a.k.a. WTF did I just watch?

Amazon has Buckaroo Banzai on Prime. I put it on for background noise in the office, so I'm sure I missed the key plot points that made it comprehensible. I'm sure KidA will be along to explain it to me shortly. Doing a little research after the movie, it appears that Amazon has acquired some rights and is doing a pilot series based on the characters.

Ha. No. It's a classic because it is incomprehensible.

This film is pure camp genius.
Buckaroo Banzai... neurosurgeon, test pilot, scientist, rockstar, crimefighter, with his merry band of cohorts, who are also literally his bandmates in his rock band, Buckaroo Banzai and the Hong Kong Cavaliers.
And let's not forget Team Banzai and his legion of supporters in his fan club.

Here is a piece of trivia (B5R always has trivia about weird films) you might find interesting

The writer of Buckaroo Banzai was working on a sequel for the continuing adventures of Team Banzai that had the same campy tone as the original.
When the studio said no to a sequel, the writer retooled his script for a different type of hero and band of helpers... and the film was made just a few years later...
Big Trouble in Little China

Thanks to the cult success both films enjoyed, there was, for a time, a project in development, teaming Jack Burton and Buckaroo Banzai together. Of course, it never happened.

I loved that movie! Remember driving a girlfriend crazy back in High School, going to the movie twice. She hated it, which made me like it all the more!

Holy crap, did not know there was a connection between the two. Both are great cult movies.

Python's Holy Grail had that exact same effect with my wife.

And, if memory serves, the producer or director or someone had promised Kurt Russell the lead in Bull Durham. Kurt ended up being away filming Big Trouble and the snake (get it?) gave the role to Kevin Costner...

Which reminds me, it's about that time of year to watch Bull Durham again.

There are multiple fun deep cultural references within the movie. And, of course, the Overthruster is the model for the key device in Doc's time machine in Back to the Future. And so many of the actors went on to bigger (better?) things?

Another piece of trivia: Buckaroo Banzai appears in Battletech as a professor and battlemech designer. Apparently, his adventures led him to the 31st century, where giant robots battle across the galaxy.

Another cult classic, it's one of those movies that I'll always tune into for a bit if it pops up on the box.

The countdown has begun, first time in my life I've ever seen the Cubs kick off the MLB season.

I've always loved Buckaroo Bonzai, and the nonsensical dialog.

"Why is that watermelon there?"

"I've been ionized, but I'm okay now."

"I speak Spanish to God, French to women, English to men, and Japanese to my horse."

"Buckaroo, the White House wants to know is everything OK with the alien space craft from Planet 10 or should we just go ahead and destroy Russia?"

Most folks don't know that Peter Weller, besides being Robocop, is also a professor at Syracuse and holds a Ph.D in Art History.
