Same here. Joined when I was 17. As he was driving me to the MEPS Station, he asked me if this was really what I wanted to do and told me it wouldn't be easy. I responded that compared to living with him, it would be like going on a vacation. He grinned and said, I will remind you of that someday. And he did. Many many times he asked "How's the vacation going?"

Lost him less than two years ago, the day after Thanksgiving. Suddenly and unexpected. I was supposed to be there for Thanksgiving, but I canceled because of something big going on at work that wound up falling through anyway. I miss him every single day. It's like a big hole inside you that can never be filled.
I was born my papa's son
When I hit the ground I was on the run
I had one glad hand and the other behind
You can have yours, just give me mine
When the hound dog barkin' in the black of the night
Stick my hand in my pocket, everything's all right

My grandson is now 8. His father is a Marine, and mom is Army. He is a rough and tumble boy. 2 weeks ago, while he was spending his school vacation with Grandma and Papa, we were rough housing, and I flipped him upside down. He immediately began to squeal, and then screamed
"Help I don't feel safe!!!" I was so shocked I nearly dropped him on his head. I asked, Nikko, where did you learn that?? (he has never said anything remotely like this before)

Three guesses as to the origin of "victimspeak" And no, he did not get a safe space. Jebus!!
