The Unknowns

About halfway through this book by Patrick O’Donnell, and I am humbled by the wealth of details in this story of of the eight men, the Body Bearers, chosen to escort the Unknown Soldier from France to the place of honor at Arlington.

It is a deeply moving, visceral tale of Q boats and U boats, of Merchant Marines at sea and US Marines at Belleau Wood, of Soissons, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, Mont Blanc Ridge, and many other odd-sounding, now-forgotten places in France once drenched with American blood. In the background is the story of the AEF, called at the time “After England Failed,” and General John J. Pershing, called “Black Jack.” Ever in the foreground is the doughboy and his dramatic story, from which is gleaned the hallowed history of the Unknowns, plural for a reason many do not know.

If I taught HS American History, this book would be mandatory reading. I highly recommend it.
