Cuba's old cars

We went to Cuba to see some old cars.

There are some great stories about these old clunkers.

First picture is a 1958 Edsel. It did not start life as a convertible. It has been handed down from Grandfather to father to son. It has the original engine, but the auto transmission has been 'upgraded' to a 3 speed on the floor.

The blue car, a 1952 Chevy, has after market air conditioning. The engine, long expired, has been replaced with a Peugeot diesel that gives it enough speed to barely get out of it's own way. The driver, Evelio Munduy is a Chofer Profesional.

Old guy by the back end of a lion.

Ingenuity and necessity has kept these cars alive long past their lifespan. Always has fascinated me.

A testament to human ability to adapt to difficult situations, indeed.

I saw a documentary about these cars, can't remember if it was Netflix or one of the HBO type channels--like you said, the Cuban grease monkey's are unmatched when it comes to fixing it, or making it work to keep these cars alive. Worth the watch if you can find the doc, can't remember the title right now.

There have been a few shows/docs about old Cuban cars but I think this is the one you're talking about:
