I think if I had to make an educated guess on who is the favorite of the remaining teams - I would likely pick Belgium. I'm not saying I want them to win it - but they have the ability to do it.

Honestly, I think it's really open for any team right now. Which makes it even more exciting to watch. I'm really looking forward to England-Colombia on Tuesday.

My guess for potential winners are Brazil/Mexico (* see below), Spain, and a recently added France. I didn't realize how much speed France had....they were shredding the Argentina defense especially on the right side. Argentina was lucky that the match didn't end with 7 French goals.

*There is a part of me that thinks that this year's Cup winner will be the winner of this week's Brazil/Mexico match.

Colombia and Uruguay have an outside shot. The rest I just don't see as having a real chance...yes...including England. Still will be a good match but they'd really have to play out of their heads to get past Colombia.

In more ways than soccer.

I can say this given my wife is Colombian and I have an English sir name and according to 23andme, my DNA is comprised of over 50% English stock. All 3 girls in my house are intending to wear their Colombian World Cup jerseys during the match. As a result, given my perpetual propensity to live life on the wild side, I now have to go find a Union Jack to wave around.

I may have to take Spain off my list after this match against Russia.

Potentially going to penalty kicks? Against Russia? Not Cup ready win or lose.

Russia advances. Spain controlled the match but couldnt score beyond the one goal. They didn't look like Cup winners.

Now I am sure that it will either be France or the winner of Brazil/Mexico (<< more likely)

The handball called against Spain was motherfucking bullshit.

The ball played a hand. The hand did not play the ball.

^^^^ I agree with the BS call on the handball.

HDLS, I also think Mexico or Brazil have a great chance of taking it all. As I said earlier - this world cup is already awesome from my perspective because it ain't gonna be Germany or Argentina !! I'm still pulling for England, but don't believe they have much of a chance. And I still believe Belgium can be a sleeper...

Just curious if, after the first round of penalty kicks they're still knotted, they then go to some sort of sudden death round of penalty kicks?

Personally, I'd just as soon they do it like hockey and keep playing until somebody scores. Not a big fan of penalty kicks/shots in any sport, and in hockey they just go to OT periods until one team puts a puck in the net when they reach the playoffs.

I suppose in soccer, though, there is no telling when it might end.

Thanks, similar to hockey during the regular season.

I finished watching the first match between Russian/Spain and would have never figured that when I tuned in late to the Denmark/Croatia game that they would wind up doing the same thing.

Spinner I agree. A team game that gets decided by a skills competition sucks. Just play until someone wins. Maybe it will force some of these teams to quit playing for the tie.

I'm in Port Chester, NY watching the game at a Brazilian Braseria with a thousand Brazilian/Mexican fans. The women are absolutely incredible. I imagine this is what heaven looks like.

Not only that, but when they go to those extra periods they play on even if one team scores, according to one of the commentators that is because this protocol was deemed to be "fair".

I guess in soccer sudden death wouldn't carry as much emotion as it does in hockey, where plays happen much quicker and the shots can come fast and furious, sometimes several in the space of seconds.

Still, I thought it was interesting to watch two teams go into all that extra time back to back, even though shootouts to decide a championship or advancing to another round strike me as a bit odd. I'm assuming that in the championship game they would stick with the same system.

Even in championship it can go to penalty kicks. That Japan Belgium game was spectacular today.
