Thanks, Stretch.

I actually didn't take any photos worth sharing, with the possible exception of a bright red bug I had never seen before. This was a relatively easy segment and typical SoCal landscape - i.e. shades of green and brown - which I see every day. If I had done the originally planned, additional 8 miles to Combs Peak, I am sure I would have been compelled to take some pics. Next time...

I got one, pretty sure from here, right at $100, and I'm convinced it was never issued or used, and DRMO'd because it was woodlands, black, and green....

Very cool, CSM. Thanks for the info. I'll probably get this for that price.

So here are the pics of the little red critter I came across...
My google-fu found something similar called a "red velvet ant" - but it doesn't look exactly like this fella and it isn't fuzzy. Anyone know what this is?

looks like a red velvet variant to me. I think without looking it up, they're a wingless wasp in actuality. but I've seen variations of the coloring and patterns in different states.

Eagle Rock

Got out for a an overnight hike-camp this weekend. It was great to get out, but what the hell is up with the weather... 88 degrees by 11AM on Nov 25? Even in SoCal that's ridiculous... I made it out to the very aptly named Eagle Rock, and then headed back north to camp site that actually had trees. Pack was just under 40 lbs. Looking forward to the next time, where I head farther north.

What's the rope for? I'm so jealous, I'm living in a damn city right now.

Always bring a rope in the outdoors. A behavior drilled into my psyche by my Platoon Sergeant many years ago. It's better to have it and not need it - than to need it and not have it. And on more than one patrol in the PI jungle - we needed it.

Once a Marine, always a Marine! It's easy to be hard but it's hard to be smart! I have been on a lot of backpacking trips and so far have never had a use for rope. 550 cord I always bring though.

Yep. And the one time I don't bring it is exactly the time I will need it!
And the 550 cord is in one of the bags ...

Ok - not the PCT - but I have had the opportunity to spend some time in Utah (on my way back and forth to CO) and have done several day hikes in both Utah and CO. Amazing country. So far the most impressive was a hike at Dead Horse Point that overlooks Canyonlands National Park. It was a short hike of about 3 miles around the rim, but the views were beyond description. These photos don't do it justice, but I wanted to post something.
