He’s been charged and facing upwards of $4,000 in fines if convicted

Why didn't one of the other cops arrest him for assault?

Depends on how it works there. In my area, if you come across an off duty cop who needs to be arrested, have at it (been there done that). However if memory serves me correct, any arrest and subsequent charges for something done on duty must go through the DAs office. In that case the best any other officer in scene could do is tap the offending officer out of the situation and immediately notify a supervisor.

"I'm giving you permission to slap the shit out of me and get it off your chest to see what happens..."

The policeman certainly sounds and acts like a bully - it looked and sounded like he was goading the old man into an ass whipping - but nobody FORCED that old man to put his hand in the cops face.

There are no winners here.
Cop = bully
Old Man = dumb ass
Bystanders = indifferent
American Public = another step down the trail of disillusionment with LE
Honorable Hard Serving Decent LE = suffering yet another "broad brush" black eye from a silly internet video

Soon to be fired I hope.

I had a few guys beg me "can you just kick my ass, I can't afford to be arrested."

Never took them up on it.

Fuck me....I'll never understand why these guys aren't hunted in the streets like it was deer season. You don't want me on the jury for someone who zaps a cop who does something like this.

That incident was in September 2018.

The officer has had over a full year paid vacation while the DA finally extracted his head out of his ass and presented the case to the grand jury.

WTF?

Prediction: The other officers wrote lies in their report,
since according to the newspaper article the officer doing the slapping
didn't have his body worn camera on (what about the others?)
and the slapping officer was apparently unaware that another officer,
with a camera recording, was walking up to the scene.

Still, all involved should have been given about 24 hours to write out
a full and truthful statement of what happened, with their jobs and
possible felony prosecution on the line.

One report has the victim as under a bar letter / aka "criminal trespass letter" barring him from the IHOP restaurant, so I suspect he was a
known subject to the officers, perhaps as a eat and run walkaway as some
of my homeless clients are known to do.

Like CB said, the bigger problem here is it happened a year ago and not a single person wearing a uniform that was present, has been held accountable. I am hoping to see criminal charges versus the fine. At a minimum the other Deputies should be fired and possible charged as well. Putting hands on the old man was wrong, but covering for him was equally as criminal IMO.

The good thing about this is that is was all on video, so Mr. Tough Guy isn't going to be able to twist the story up.

Pathetic.

Wow... that's a pretty broad brush you have there. So, in your opinion, the thousands of cops out here are all third world thug cops?

Should the officer in the video be fired? Hell yes! He should even be charged with assault, but to lump all of us in with this martian is just ignorant.
