IV Fluid Shortage

Our amazing logistical system fails again as facilities are running out of dextrose and normal saline among other IV fluids. Anyone have a warehouse full of fluid you are sitting on? Let me know.

I guess the hurricane is partially to blame, but I heard there was also some other plant that was destroyed in another location due to a fire. Still trying to fact check that.

We're getting hit pretty hard with this, similar to most other places in the country. Currently our shortage is limited to "minibags", but I hear the larger bags are going on allocation as well. The other issue is that the empty bags are manufactured in PR as well, so we can't even take larger IV bags and split them up into smaller doses.

Just giving everything we can as IV push for now...

Well that can be a blessing. It gives nursing staff more time with individual patients to simply chat. Be a killer though if you have a lot of pushes at the same time.

I wonder if this will have a ripple effect over to Aussie ...

Cheers,

Interesting because in my neck of the woods we are short on flushes.... can't order them.

We're using 10cc syringes with jumpers to draw out of 50ml and other bags to BYOF... "build your own flush!"

We had a national back order on some RSI drugs (Roc and Succs) and 1:10 epi as well...

What's up with that. You'd think these things would be a no brainer in terms of production.

The folks I have connections with said the FDA is working to expedite other importation and that what we will get is going to come Australia. (Last time Spain and Germany helped)

Of the 3 companies that the US is provided by -

Braun is retooling plant.

Baxter is in PR still not operational.

Hospira is picking up all the slack.

We have not seen the IV fluid shortage, at least not to my supply guys report. What we have had issues with is Epi 1:10. We have had to build code kits with NSS flush and 1:1.

I think the saline flush shortage was due to a recall after some shipments were sent out missing the saline....awesome QC.

We are on shortage of morphine, prefilled calcium chloride and prefilled EPI 1:10
