MG Joseph L. Osterman

Huge promotion

Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Joseph L. Osterman for appointment to the rank of lieutenant general, and for assignment as deputy commander, U.S. Special Operations Command. Osterman is currently serving as commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

It would be atypical for an officer with no SOF experience to become DCG, USSOCOM.

Weird that there is not a more "SOF" qualified officer out there to be USSOCOM deputy commander, because reading this bio leads me to question how he ended up in charge of MARSOC... Perhaps he did some stuff that won't show up in an unclass bio, but I doubt it...

To me this shows a lack of depth of special operations experience on the MARSOC (or other than Army, perhaps due to a lack of senior billets) side of the house, and it's probably a quota thing where if the CG USSSOCOM is an Army guy, then the deputy will be another branch to ensure the love is spread evenly.

There are/were SOF qualified officers, unfortunately they don't make General. MARSOCS Deputy CG is one of them.
