2 MARSOC Marines KIA

RIP Marines.
-----------------------
The Pentagon confirmed on Monday that two decorated MARSOC gunnies were killed during combat in Afghanistan. Gunnery Sgt. Daniel J. Price, 27, of Holland, Michigan and Gunnery Sgt. Jonathan W. Gifford, 34, of Palm Bay, Florida.

Price and Gifford died during a morning patrol in Badghis province. Gifford was assigned to 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Price was assigned to 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Both gunnies were critical skills operators and were assigned to Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command. Gunny Sgt. Price was a Purple Heart recipient and had been deployed three times each in support of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, according to a Marine Corps news release.

On November 10, the Marine Corps birthday, Price received a Bronze Star with “V” device for his actions during a 2009, battle in Afghanistan’s Farah province. The Marine Corps Times website says about Price's heroic actions, "when the remote weapon on his vehicle was destroyed, he climbed on top to man its MK19 grenade launcher, according to his medal citation.

Price manned the MK19 for four hours despite enemy rounds whizzing by him, killing numerous insurgents in the process. The report says, "he was a member of Camp Pendleton’s 1st Recon Battalion before joining MAROC in 2008."

Gunny Sgt. Gifford served almost 15 years in the Corps. He was a member of force reconnaissance community before joining MARSOC. He also served multiple combat deployments and earned a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with combat “V."

Parts of the Badghis province, which borders Turkmenistan, have been marked by violence for the past several years. In 2009, 16 cases of self-immolation had been registered in Badghis province.

I am the captain of my soul.
